Bangladesh refuses to go to India, suggests alternative venue
Deteriorating political relations between Bangladesh and India are now having a profound impact on cricket fields. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that it will not send its team to India for the World Cup due to the current security situation.
The BCB has immediately revoked the permission issued to fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman to play in the IPL 2026. The board says that even if the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) change their decision, Mustafizur will not be sent to India due to security concerns.
Bangladeshi authorities have decided to formally request the ICC to move Bangladesh's World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka. It is worth noting that Bangladesh is scheduled to play its first three matches in Kolkata.
Asif Nazrul, the sports advisor to Bangladesh, said in a strong reaction on social media: "If a contracted Bangladeshi player cannot be safe in India, how can the entire team feel safe there? We have directed the BCB to inform the ICC about the situation and demand the transfer of matches." Asif Nazrul further said that they have also requested the Ministry of Information to ban the broadcast of IPL in Bangladesh.
The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) had asked the Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman, who was bought for 9.2 crore rupees in the auction last month. Some religious and political leaders in India had been strongly criticizing the participation of Bangladeshi players, after which the situation took a serious turn.
Amjad Hussain, the chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's media committee, has confirmed that a formal protest letter is being written to the ICC after an emergency meeting of the board's directors.
