Eight Trinamool Congress MPs protesting in front of Home Ministry taken into custody
Eight Trinamool Congress MPs, including Derek O'Brien, Mahua Moitra, Shatabdi Roy, Saket Gokhale, Kirti Azad, Pratima Mondal, Bapi Haldar, and Dr. Shreemali Sarkar, were detained by Delhi Police on Friday as they staged a protest outside the Ministry of Home Affairs against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid.
They have accused the central government of misusing the investigative agency. During the protest, the MPs held placards that read "Amit Shah's ED vs People of Bengal" and "However many attacks you make, Bengal will win again".
Police forcibly put Derek O'Brien and Mahua Moitra into a police van. Meanwhile, Derek O'Brien told the media that what was happening to the MPs was being witnessed by all.
The protest came a day after the ED conducted raids at 15 locations in Kolkata and Delhi in connection with alleged illegal coal mining and money laundering. The raids included the residence of Pratik Jain, head of a private company called I-Pac.
Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra alleged that the ED was being used as a weapon to attack political opponents and the agency was looting their documents and election strategy.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed strong reaction to the action, alleging that the ED was stealing Trinamool Congress's election strategy and data under the pretext of searching I-Pac offices.
During the raid, Ms. Banerjee herself reached the spot and claimed that they were seizing her party's papers, which she has retrieved. The Chief Minister targeted the Home Minister, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should control him.
On the other hand, the ED has approached the Calcutta High Court against Ms. Banerjee. The agency has sought permission from the court to file a case against the Chief Minister. The ED alleges that the Chief Minister forcibly snatched documents and digital evidence during the search operation, which is a misuse of constitutional authority.
