Government is wasting parliament's time: Opposition

4 min read

In the Lok Sabha, opposition party members on Tuesday termed the "Repealing and Amending Bill 2025" as a waste of time, saying that many of the bills were passed by this government itself and are now being repealed. Opposition members also said that the government should take steps to ensure timely delivery of justice to the people and appoint judges to achieve this.

Congress leader Dean Kuriakose, initiating the discussion on the "Repealing and Amending Bill 2025", said that the colonial-era laws are being repealed under the guise of complete arbitrariness. Many of the bills being passed are those that were passed just last year. This clearly shows that the government is only wasting Parliament's time. He also said that the government should take steps to ensure timely delivery of justice to the people and take measures to reform the judicial system, fill the shortage of judges.

BJP's Manoj Tiwari, participating in the discussion on the bill, said that when the law becomes a web of ambiguity, amendment becomes necessary. He said that cases in courts are being delayed and if the government wants to ensure timely delivery of justice to the people, and is repealing complex laws and amending many others, then no one should have any problem with it. He said that this repeal bill includes four bills that are being amended and other bills are being proposed to be repealed.

Samajwadi Party's Lal Ji Verma, opposing the bill, said that earlier, bills that came to the House for discussion used to be discussed in parliamentary committees, but the Modi government is passing bills in a hurry, riding on a bullet train, and wants to pass all bills in Parliament in a hurry. Many of these bills were passed by the same Modi government, but now it is being said that they are no longer needed. He termed it as haste on the part of the government in passing bills, saying that the government's policy is uncertain and it does not bring any bill after proper consideration. He said that the bill should be sent to a parliamentary committee and brought to Parliament after necessary amendments.

DMK's Dr. Kalanidhi Veeraswami said that the government has a majority in Parliament and is taking advantage of it by bringing bills in a hurry. He said that the government brings bills to Parliament with full preparation and does not send them to committees, so the bills that were passed in this government are being repealed. He said that the government has a majority and is ignoring rules and regulations and passing bills arbitrarily, without respecting constitutional principles. He urged the central government to discuss the bills it is bringing to Parliament with the opposition and bring a comprehensive and complete bill in the national interest. Bills should not be brought in haste and the names of the bills should not be in Hindi.

Telugu Desam Party's Sri Bharat Matukumalli, supporting the bill, said that whenever the government enacts a new law or makes changes to old laws, it is based on the needs and interests of society. He said that the government's objective is to make work easier and such laws that create confusion need to be removed. Therefore, by bringing a bill to repeal these laws, the government is taking a big step in the public interest and everyone should welcome it. The government's move to remove unnecessary laws is a correct step.

Trinamool Congress's Kalyan Banerjee said that a large number of cases are pending in the Supreme Court, which need to be resolved, and for this, the country needs more judges. A similar situation exists in the High Courts and district courts, but the government is ignoring it and not taking steps to appoint judges. He said that the government should take steps for the future of the country, as people are losing faith in the judicial system, and the government should take steps to restore this faith.

Janata Dal (United)'s Kushalendra Kumar said that this move is important and by doing so, the government is repealing bills that are no longer needed.

Congress candidate Amandaram Beniwal said that instead of solving important issues, the government is merely beating the drum of technical progress by introducing such laws.
