KKR have released Musfiqur Rahman following BCCI's directive
New Delhi
The Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has made a significant decision by releasing Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the 2026 season. The franchise issued an official media release confirming that the move was made in accordance with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL regulatory guidelines.
A media advisory issued by KKR stated that the BCCI/IPL had directed the team to release Mustafizur Rahman before the upcoming season. Following the necessary procedures and mutual consultations, the decision was implemented. The franchise also clarified that, as per IPL regulations, the BCCI has allowed KKR to include an alternative player, the details of which will be shared in due time.
Mustafizur Rahman was acquired by KKR for 9.20 crore in the IPL 2026 auction held in December. He was the only Bangladeshi player to secure a contract for the season. However, his selection has recently sparked political and social backlash, making the matter a subject of debate.
Mustafizur Rahman's IPL career has been impressive. He made his IPL debut in 2016 and has since represented teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings. He has taken 65 wickets in 60 IPL matches and is known for his ability to deliver yorkers in death overs. He was part of the Delhi Capitals team in IPL 2025, joining as an injury replacement.
Following Mustafizur's release, the KKR IPL 2026 squad will now work with players such as Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, Imran Malik, Cameron Green, Rachin Ravindra, Matheesha Pathirana, Rahul Tripathi, and others to shape their future strategies. The franchise is currently on the lookout for alternative players to strengthen the team's balance.
