On one hand we reached Mamata's rally, on the other hand Trinamool suspended them

2 min read

Kolkata, 5 December. Trinamool Congress suspended MLA Humayun Kabir from the Bhatar seat in Murshidabad, West Bengal on Thursday. Urban Development Minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim made the announcement at a press conference in Kolkata. He was accompanied by two senior leaders from Murshidabad: State Minister for Power Akhruzzaman and MLA from Hariharpara, Niamat Sheikh. Both leaders endorsed the party's decision.

In this regard, Humayun Kabir claimed that he had not yet received any official letter regarding his suspension. He said, "I won't say anything without confirmation, wait for the right time, I have a lot to say." The MLA also announced that he would resign from his post next week.

Humayun Kabir has been facing the wrath of the party leadership since he announced the construction of the Babri mosque in Beldanga on 6 December. Trinamool's stance on the matter was clear: politics that inflame religious sentiments will not be tolerated. However, Humayun was not willing to retract his statement.

The Trinamool Congress leadership believes that announcing the construction of the mosque on the day of the Babri mosque's demolition could increase communal tension. Hakim said that while there is no objection to the construction of a mosque, inflaming religious sentiments is unacceptable. Humayun's move could be a threat to the state's communal harmony.

Interestingly, Humayun Kabir was present at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's rally in Baharampur at the same time when his suspension was announced at a press conference in Kolkata. As soon as he learned of his suspension, he left the pandal.

While leaving the venue, he said, "I will announce a new party on 22 December. I will field candidates on 135 seats. I will show Trinamool and BJP the power of Humayun Kabir."

This is not the first time Humayun Kabir has been suspended from Trinamool. In 2015, he was expelled from the party for six years. He then contested the 2016 election as an independent and lost. After that, he returned to the Congress party. In 2019, he joined the BJP and contested the Lok Sabha election, but was unsuccessful. Just before the 2021 assembly elections, he returned to Trinamool and won the Bhatar seat.

Even after becoming an MLA, his relationships with controversies continued. He received several show-cause notices, apologized, but after some time, he was again in the headlines with controversial statements.

This time, the party leadership is not willing to take any risk before the elections. Senior party leaders felt that Humayun's stance could directly benefit the BJP. Therefore, it was decided to remove him from the party completely.
