Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated three development projects worth around Rs 23,550 crore in the city of Silchar, the headquarters of Cachar district. This is the last leg of his two-day visit to Assam ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

According to information, after spending the night in Guwahati, Modi left for Silchar in the morning, where he laid the foundation stone for the Rs 22,864 crore Shillong-Silchar corridor project.

The 166 km long four-lane corridor, the first access-controlled greenfield high-speed expressway in the Northeast, aims to significantly improve connectivity between Shillong in Meghalaya and Silchar in Assam's five grams.

Once completed, the project will reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar from around 8.5 hours to around five hours, promoting economic activities and cross-border trade in the region.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for an elevated corridor on NH-306 in Silchar, which will stretch from Trunk Road near Silchar's Capital Point to Rangirkhari Point (Phase I). A 3.5 km long flyover bridge will be built at a cost of Rs 564.50 crore, along with a 6.9 km service road, which is part of the project.

The project aims to reduce traffic congestion on one of the city's busiest roads and improve connectivity with neighboring states such as Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for an agricultural college in Patharkandi, Karimganj district. The first phase of construction will be completed on 88 hectares of land at a cost of Rs 122 crore.

The Prime Minister arrived in Guwahati on March 13 and on the first day of his visit, he flagged off projects worth around Rs 24,250 crore. The Prime Minister virtually laid the foundation stone for the projects from a large public gathering in Ambikapur, Silchar.
