Former Congress president and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by police on Wednesday during a protest at Jantar Mantar against the Election Commission. Several Members of Parliament from opposition parties also joined the protest. Mr. Gandhi and Mrs. Vadra were protesting against the Election Commission and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. During the incident, police forcibly lifted Mr. Gandhi and placed him in a bus. Mrs. Vadra refused to leave the spot and sat on the ground, after which police officers forcibly lifted her and took her to the bus. This is the second time in the past two days that the two leaders have been detained during the ongoing sit-in protest and demonstrations against the Election Commission.
On Tuesday, during the "Save Democracy" march from Parliament House to Nirvan Chaudhary, the two leaders spent the day in the courtyard of Akashvani Bhavan. They were demanding a meeting with the Election Commission. After the day-long sit-in, both were detained in the evening and sent to Kingsway Camp, where they were released late at night.
When police attempted to forcibly remove the Congress leaders from the protest site, Mrs. Vadra said, "I will not leave from here. Police have beaten Members of Parliament who are demanding a meeting with the Election Commission. Female police officers threw me to the ground and I have sustained scratches in several places. Whatever happens, we will not back down. We will continue to fight for the rights of the people."
As police took Mrs. Vadra to forcibly seat her in the bus, she said before entering, "This is not the way. The country is watching... what is happening. This fight is not just about us, but about the future of democracy."
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said regarding the detention of Mr. Gandhi and Mrs. Vadra, "No matter how many cases you file, no matter how much you threaten, we are not afraid. We will keep smiling and move forward."
Earlier, Members of Parliament from opposition parties gathered for lunch and then set off from there with Mr. Gandhi for the sit-in and protest at Jantar Mantar. Members of Parliament from various parties were present at the protest. Congress leaders alleged that Members of Parliament were also detained and mistreated. Members of Parliament from several parties of the India Alliance joined the protest and raised slogans demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and a meeting with the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, police also detained several workers of the Youth Congress and the party's student wing, NSUI, from Jantar Mantar. UNI.
