Jacob Bethell's century also failed to save England from disaster

The ongoing Ashes series at the Sydney Cricket Ground has entered its decisive and nerve-wracking phase. On the fourth day of the match, where Jacob Bethell showered runs with his bat, scoring a memorable century, the Australian bowlers wreaked havoc on the English batting line, leaving it in tatters. At the end of the day, England has scored 302 runs in its second innings, losing 8 wickets, but the heavy lead of the Kangaroos has raised clouds of defeat.

Australia advanced its first innings to 518 runs today. Stand-in captain Steve Smith showcased his traditional expertise, playing a lengthy innings of 138 runs, which included 16 fours and a towering six. As soon as Smith was out on Josh Tongue's ball, the Australian tail failed to last long, and the entire team returned to the pavilion after scoring 567 runs. This gave Australia a mountainous lead of 183 runs in the first innings.

The start of the English team, which took to the field with a deficit of 183 runs, was nothing short of a nightmare. Mitchell Starc sent Zach Crawley packing in the very first over. In such a situation, young Jacob Bethell took charge and became a rock in the face of the Australian bowling storm. Bethell played an unbeaten innings of 142 runs, providing a lifeline to his team's hopes. He put up resistance in the company of Ben Duckett (42) and Harry Brook (42), but wickets from the other end proved to be a wall of sand.

At one point, England seemed stable, having scored 184 runs for the loss of 3 wickets, but Beau Webster turned the match on its head by dismissing Harry Brook and Will Jacks in the same over. The failures of Joe Root (1) and captain Ben Stokes (1) broke England's back. At the end of the day, Matthew Potts is accompanying Bethell on zero, while England has a slender lead of 119 runs and only 2 wickets in hand.

If Australia manages to take the remaining two wickets early tomorrow morning, it will be a mere formality for the Kangaroos to achieve the target. Will Bethell be able to turn his century into a miracle, or will the Sydney sun rise with the news of England's defeat? The decision will be made in the first session tomorrow.
