A no-confidence motion has been brought against Birla to maintain the dignity of Parliament: Opposition
In the Lok Sabha, Congress Deputy Leader Gourav Gogoi said on Tuesday that the opposition has brought a no-confidence motion against the Speaker to ensure equal treatment of members in the House and to save the dignity of Parliament.
Mr. Gogoi said that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has a good personal relationship with everyone, but in the House, not all members are treated equally. He said that the Speaker's duty is to be the guardian of the House, not the voice of the government.
He said that during the thanksgiving proposal on the President's address, Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak. He was repeatedly interrupted by government members, even by the Ministers of Defense, Home, and Parliamentary Affairs.
Mr. Gogoi said that Rahul Gandhi wanted to raise important issues, such as when the Chinese army was moving towards the Indian border, the then Army Chief General Manoj Naravane had asked the Defense Minister for action orders, but after several hours, he was told by the Prime Minister to "do what you think is right."
On this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju objected that the discussion is deviating from the subject of the no-confidence motion. Gogoi replied that if the number of interruptions in the House is counted, it will be clear that Rijiju has intervened the most.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah said that Rijiju's intervention is because the opposition has never been so irresponsible. Gogoi said that Shah's statement has further widened the scope of his speech.
The Congress Deputy Leader further said that in the documents of the US Department of Justice, the name of an Indian industrialist and a minister has appeared. He alleged that the Prime Minister has agreed to a trade deal with the US that will destroy the country's business and agricultural sector. He asked what pressure is there that the Prime Minister is making this harmful deal against the country's interest.
He said that "the country wants to know whether what General Naravane has said in his book is hollow or General Naravane is lying? These things should come out before the public."
Earlier, Congress's Mohammed Javed had moved the no-confidence motion against Birla, which was supported by more than 50 members.
On this, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen's Asaduddin Owaisi said that after the motion against Birla, the members of the panel appointed by him cannot preside. Since there is no Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha at present, any member can preside during the discussion after the opinion of the House. Congress's K C Venugopal and Trinamool Congress's Sugata Roy also expressed the same opinion, but the presiding Jagdambika Pal rejected their objection.
