Authorities in besieged Gaza have recovered the bodies and remains of 12 more Palestinians from the rubble of homes destroyed by Israeli bombardment in Gaza City's al-Taj Square, bringing the death toll in the area to 75. In a brief statement on Thursday, Civil Defense said its teams in Gaza, with the support of an Egyptian committee, were continuing search and rescue operations under the rubble of destroyed homes in the Yarmouk neighborhood for the twelfth consecutive day. These search and rescue operations are part of the second phase of the 'Recovery of Martyrs' bodies' project launched by the Civil Defense on July 19, which aims to retrieve the remains of missing persons from buildings destroyed by Israel. The second phase includes searches under the rubble of houses in Gaza, Northern Gaza and Central Gaza and has been ongoing for 800 working hours. According to previous Civil Defense data, the search operation destroyed 147 Covered houses, and the bodies of 1,072 people are believed to be still under the rubble. Recovery efforts have been slow due to a lack of essential equipment and machinery, although a cease-fire agreement has been in effect in Gaza since October 10, 2025, which Palestinian officials say has allowed the entry of heavy equipment and machinery to help remove debris and evacuate victims. In October 2025, Gaza's government media office said that some 9,500 Palestinians have been missing since the start of the Israeli genocide on the besieged territory, including those whose bodies are buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings and others whose whereabouts are unknown. The first phase of the 'Recovery of Martyrs' bodies' project began in late November 2025 and recovered approximately 333 bodies, while 559 people were reported missing under the rubble of 54 houses and buildings. Since October 2023, Israel has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in its genocide in Gaza, and 174,000 from More people were injured. Experts say the actual death toll is much higher than reported by Gaza authorities, and is estimated at around 200,000. Israel has destroyed much of the besieged territory and displaced the entire population. It still controls 60 percent of Gaza. A ceasefire was reached in October 2025. Yet Israel continues to violate it on a daily basis, killing at least 1,375 Palestinians and injuring 4,686 others, making it a one-sided settlement.
