Ajmal vents anger on Congress over AIUDF's defeat

Awaz E Bihar•5 May 2026 at 02:07 pm•8 views•2 min read

Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is furious over his party's dismal defeat. Venting his anger, he said the Congress party has lost its political ground in Assam. He stated that the Congress has now become like the Muslim League. Last night, while talking to the media about the political situation during the vote count, Badruddin Ajmal launched a scathing attack on the Congress.

Amid the changing electoral landscape in the state, Ajmal made a strong political statement, saying that the Congress has been finished in Assam. The Congress has become the Muslim League. Meanwhile, Badruddin Ajmal made a comeback in the state's politics by winning from the newly formed Bana Kandi constituency. However, his party has shown its worst performance so far in the Assam assembly elections and has managed to get only 2 seats.

Ajmal defeated Assam Jatiya Parishad's Rezaul Karim Chowdhury by 35,380 votes. Ajmal got 1,19,721 votes, while Chowdhury got 84,341 votes. The opposition candidate had the support of a united alliance. The ruling alliance had fielded Assam Gana Parishad's Shahabuddin Choudhury, who came third with 20,955 votes.

This win is a symbol of Ajmal's return to state politics after his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In the Lok Sabha elections, he had suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Congress leader Rumi Nath in the Dhubri seat. Before this defeat, Ajmal had represented Dhubri in Parliament for three consecutive terms.

He entered electoral politics in 2006. A year earlier, he had founded the AIUDF. In his first assembly election, he had won from the South Salmara seat. Since then, the party has maintained its presence in Assam politics and is often seen as a representative of Bengali-speaking Muslims in the state. Bana Kandi, located in the Hojai district, is one of the new constituencies formed after the 2023 delimitation. Ajmal's win on this seat has given his party an opportunity to establish itself in this newly formed area.
