Kolkata: Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee claimed on Saturday that the opposition India alliance has united to thwart the central government's attempts to amend the Constitution. He clarified that it was not the women's reservation bill but the delimitation bill that was stalled.
Addressing a public meeting in Murshidabad in support of party candidates in the assembly elections, Abhishek Banerjee said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cannot change the Constitution even if it wants to. He said that due to the unity of opposition parties, the central government could not get its proposal approved.
Earlier, Abhishek Banerjee had held roadshows in Farakka and Shamsherganj assembly constituencies. A large number of supporters gathered for the roadshow, which was taken from Alaman Education Mission Ground to Jangi Mor in Farakka. The crowd was seen not only on the roadside but also on the roofs and balconies of houses.
In a meeting after the roadshow, he targeted Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Jantantrik Anandolan Party founder Humayun Kabir. Later, in a rally in support of TMC candidate Shoni Singh Roy at Lalbagh Singhi High School Ground, he attacked both the BJP and the Congress.
Abhishek Banerjee said that the central government was playing divisive politics to divide the country, but the Trinamool Congress and opposition parties together foiled it. He said that there has been no change in the Constitution and it is the power of the people.
On the issue of deletion of names from electoral lists, he assured the affected people that those whose names have been deleted would be provided with identity cards soon.
On the issue of erosion of the Ganges, Abhishek Banerjee said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to the central government several times to declare it a national calamity, but no step has been taken yet. He also accused the Congress of being inactive on the issues of the region.
