As assembly elections draw near in West Bengal, the political temperature is rising. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP on Thursday, raising the issue of Bengali identity and dignity during her election campaign in Birbhum district.
After launching her campaign in North Bengal, Mamata Banerjee reached South Bengal on Thursday and addressed several election rallies, which stretched from Pandaveswar in Paschim Bardhaman to Dubrajpur in Birbhum. At a public meeting, she alleged that the BJP had insulted great personalities like Rabindranath Tagore and Amartya Sen.
The chief minister said, "These people (BJP) have deeply insulted Amartya Sen and Rabindranath. They should not get a single vote now. This time, vote for Trinamool candidates." Introducing her party candidates - Aisheng Banerjee, Chandranath Sinha, Abhijit Sinha, Abhijit Roy, and Nilabati Saha - she appealed to the people to ensure their victory.
In her speech, Mamata Banerjee also warned people about the issue of names being deleted from voter lists. She alleged that the BJP is conspiring to delete a large number of names from electoral rolls, first through the implementation of NRC, then through delimitation, and then through the census.
