Political rhetoric has intensified in the run-up to the West Bengal Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Wednesday levelled serious allegations against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of conspiring to build a Babri-like mosque in the state by using former Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir as a 'pawn'.
Addressing an election rally in Falakata, Alipurduar district, Amit Shah said Mamata Banerjee had expelled Humayun Kabir from the party as part of a political strategy. He claimed that attempts to build a structure like the Babri mosque in the state would never succeed.
The Union Home Minister accused the Chief Minister of nepotism, saying that for the past 15 years, her entire focus has been on promoting her nephew. Although he did not directly name Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, he indirectly targeted him. He said that for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, every citizen of the country is like a family member, while Mamata Banerjee is only concerned about the promotion of her family members. Amit Shah claimed that after Bihar and Odisha, it is now the turn of the BJP to form a government in West Bengal.
Earlier, addressing another rally in Rajganj, Jalpaiguri district, Amit Shah raised the issue of illegal immigration. He said that like in Assam, illegal immigrants in West Bengal would be identified and deported. He also alleged that anti-social elements patronized by the Trinamool Congress would face strict action.
Appealing to voters, he said that voting for the BJP this time would strengthen peace and curb corruption in the state. Addressing an election rally in Rajganj, Jalpaiguri district, Shah said that the departure of the Mamata Banerjee government in the state is certain, and it would begin from North Bengal.
He said that Modi had ruled Gujarat for 12 years and the central government for 12 years, but never faced a single allegation of corruption. Amit Shah alleged that Trinamool Congress leaders had misused around Rs 300 crore in the teachers' recruitment scam and around Rs 100 crore of the central government's flood relief fund for North Bengal. He said that if the BJP forms a government, strict action would be taken in these matters.
The Union Home Minister said that North Bengal is known for its 'three Ts' - tea, timber, and tourism - but Mamata Banerjee has added a "fourth T" - tears, which symbolize the alleged atrocities against BJP workers. Amit Shah appealed to voters to press the button in front of the lotus symbol on the electronic voting machine so that the BJP can "track down Trinamool goons and bring them to the court of justice".
He also announced that if the BJP forms a government, tea garden workers would be given land on lease so that they can become landowners.
