Rohingya refugees fear 500 dead as two boats sink

Awaz E Bihar•16 July 2026 at 03:58 pm•3 views•2 min read

Fears are growing that up to 500 people may have died after two boats carrying Rohingya refugees capsized off the coast of Myanmar, with one boat carrying 250 people and the other carrying 280.
According to details, a horrific incident has occurred in the Bay of Bengal involving Rohingya refugees, where two separate boats capsized, resulting in a feared death toll of over 500 people. The United Nations' global agencies working for migrants, the International Organization for Migration and the UNHCR, have confirmed the incident. According to reports, the two boats that were involved in the accident had set off from Myanmar's western Rakhine state in late June, with the majority of passengers being persecuted Rohingya Muslims, while some had begun their perilous journey from the Cox's Bazar refugee camps in Bangladesh. The report states that the two boats were destroyed at separate locations, with one boat carrying around 250 people going missing immediately after departure and losing contact with the shore. The second boat, carrying 280 people, sank off the coast of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady region on July 8 after being hit by strong waves. International aid agencies have expressed deep sorrow over the incident, urging countries around the world to take immediate and concrete actions to prevent such dangerous journeys and human smuggling by Rohingya refugees at sea.
