US Iran peace deal new proposals spark alarm on Netanyahu

Awaz E Bihar•21 May 2026 at 03:55 pm•18 views•4 min read

The United States' new proposals for an Iran peace deal have left Netanyahu on edge, with the Israeli prime minister deeply distressed after a phone call with President Trump.

US news website Axios revealed, citing three US officials, that President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu had a tense phone call on Tuesday about a new attempt at a deal with Iran, with sources saying Netanyahu was deeply distressed after the conversation. The report stated that Trump spoke to Netanyahu in a tough tone, with the conversation between the US president and Israeli prime minister taking place the previous night.

The Israeli prime minister's office and the White House declined to comment on the report, but sources said Netanyahu was furious after speaking to Trump. According to sources, Qatar and Pakistan have drafted a new peace proposal, in consultation with other regional mediator countries, aimed at reducing differences between the US and Iran.

This development comes at a time when President Trump appears to be wavering between ordering a major attack on Iran or making a deal. On the other hand, Netanyahu is extremely skeptical about negotiations and wants to restart the war, weakening Iran's military capabilities and destroying key installations to harm the Iranian government.

While Trump has consistently said he believes a deal is possible, he is also ready to restart the war if it doesn't happen. The US offer to return $25 billion in assets to Iran and a 3.67 percent uranium enrichment proposal was mentioned by Trump on Wednesday at the Coast Guard Academy, saying, "The only question is whether we go and finish it all or they sign a document. We'll see what happens."

Trump also said Netanyahu would "do what I want" on Iran, but added that their relationship is good. The two leaders have had temporary differences on the Iran issue in the past, but have remained in close contact during the war. Iran has confirmed it is reviewing the latest proposal, but has not yet shown any clear sign of flexibility.

According to three sources, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt have been working to improve the proposed draft and reduce differences over the past few days. Two Arab officials and one Israeli source said Qatar recently presented a new draft to the US and Iran. However, a fourth source said this was not a separate Qatari proposal, but rather Qatar's attempt to resolve differences in the previous Pakistani proposal.

An Arab official said Qatari officials visited Tehran at the beginning of the week, where they discussed the latest draft with Iranian officials. Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that negotiations are ongoing based on "Iran's 14-point proposal", while Pakistan's interior minister is in Tehran to assist with mediation.

This is the minister's second visit in less than a week. According to an Arab official, the goal of this new effort is to get Iran to make clearer commitments regarding its nuclear program and to get more details from the US about the phased release of frozen Iranian funds. The three sources emphasized that it is not yet clear whether Iran will agree to the new proposal or make significant changes to its stance.

A Qatari diplomat said, "As previously stated, Qatar has supported and continues to support the Pakistani-led mediation efforts and has consistently advocated for reducing tensions in the region and its people." A US source said Trump and Netanyahu had a long and "tough" conversation on Tuesday evening.

According to sources, Trump told Netanyahu that mediator countries are working on a "letter of intent" that the US and Iran would sign to formally end the war and start a 30-day negotiating period, during which they would discuss Iran's nuclear program and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Two Israeli sources said the two leaders disagreed on future strategy, while a US source said, "After the call, Bibi (Netanyahu) was very upset."

The source said the Israeli ambassador to Washington informed US lawmakers that Netanyahu was concerned about the conversation. However, an Israeli embassy spokesperson denied this, saying, "The ambassador does not comment on private conversations." Two sources noted that in the past, Netanyahu has expressed deep concern at various stages of negotiations, even if a deal was not ultimately reached.

One source said, "Bibi is always concerned." Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson said for negotiations to succeed, the US must stop its "piracy" against Iranian ships and show willingness to release frozen funds, while Israel must end the war in Lebanon.

The White House and the Israeli prime minister's office declined to comment on the report. An Israeli source said Netanyahu wants to meet with Trump in Washington in the coming weeks.
