Flood situation grave; Ghandak embankment breach submerges new areas of Sarn

Pattana: (ABN) Flood situation in Bahar remains severe. After the break on Friday, the Gunjak River’s water spread to more areas of Sarn District, causing a large number of fields, houses, and roads to be submerged. According to officials, after heavy rains in Nepal and Uttarakhand, the Gunjak, Ganga, Kosi, Bagmati, and Gahagra rivers are flowing above danger levels at several points, and there are no clear signs of improvement. A senior officer of the Water Resources Department (WRD) said that the rapidly rising water in the Gunjak River has increased pressure on the banks of Sarn, Gopalganj, East and West Champan, Vishali, Spol, and Pattana. In some places, both the left and right banks of the river are under severe pressure. After the flood water spread to more areas in Sarn District, the administration accelerated relief and rescue operations. According to the Disaster Management Department, 12 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and seven State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in the district. The department said that after the flood water spread to various areas, additional relief teams were also sent from Baitia, Gopalganj, Bhagalpur, Spol, Madhobani, Darbhanga, Samstipur, and East Champan to Sarn. Air force helicopters are also being used to deliver essential items to flood victims. Officials say that more than 3,000 ration packs have already been delivered to affected areas by air, and an additional 5,000 packs are expected to be delivered by evening. According to the Disaster Management Department, the 12 NDRF teams include 360 trained personnel who are carrying out relief and rescue work with more than 50 boats. Likewise, the SDRF teams have more than 140 trained personnel deployed and have more than 36 boats. Officials said that relief supplies from various parts of the state are being rapidly dispatched to Sarn. The district administration is continuously monitoring the flood situation and coordinating among different departments to distribute relief supplies, rescue people, and provide essential services in affected areas.
