Islamabad. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi received some relief from the court today. A local court in the federal capital Islamabad extended the interim bail of Imran and Bushra Bibi in the May 9 case and five other cases. The court directed the former prime minister to appear in person or through a video link in the next hearing. Khan has been imprisoned in Rawalpindi Jail (Adiala Jail) for quite some time. He has been convicted in several cases.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka heard the pre-arrest bail applications. Advocate Shamsa Kiani appeared on behalf of Imran and Bushra Bibi. However, due to Imran's absence, the arguments on the bail applications could not proceed. The court extended the interim bail period and adjourned the hearing till January 27.
In addition to the May 9 case, the former prime minister is also facing other cases, including attempted murder and allegedly submitting fake receipts. Bushra Bibi is facing a separate case for allegedly tampering with Toshakhana gifts. Meanwhile, the court extended Bushra Bibi's interim bail application in the pre-arrest bail and adjourned the hearing of the case till January 27.
Meanwhile, PTI's lawyer Khaleed Yousaf Chaudhry was not allowed to meet Imran Khan again to obtain his signatures on the power of attorney papers to file an appeal against his recent sentence in the Toshakhana case. PTI condemned the "deliberate obstruction" of the party founder's right to appeal in the Toshakhana 2 case. PTI said that under the Punjab Jail Rules 1978, rules 178 and 179, every prisoner has the legal right to meet their lawyer, sign legal documents, and file an appeal, and jail authorities have no right to create obstacles in this regard. The party further alleged that denying the right to appeal violates Article 10-A, 4, 9, and 25 of the Constitution.
