US President Donald Trump has said the US has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would give the US "permanent security control" in the strategically important Arctic region, increase its military presence there and prevent non-NATO countries from establishing military bases or deploying troops in Greenland. Mr Trump announced the deal on Friday, calling it an "infant life" arrangement and saying it would allow the US to maintain its position on Greenland. Long-standing national security concerns will disappear.
"The United States has entered into an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, which gives the United States permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland and fully addresses all of our key American concerns," Mr. Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. It will not cost America anything.
He said that under the agreement, rival countries of the United States will also be prevented from establishing a military base, maintaining a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington's approval.
From now on, no American competitor can ever establish a base, maintain a military presence or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our express written approval, Mr. Trump said.
He said that the United States will immediately begin work to increase its military presence in Greenland and work with the people of the semi-autonomous Danish region to develop and build there.
"We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a wonderful future for this large and highly strategic region," Mr. Trump said. He said we will protect him completely.
According to the Danish prime minister's office, the governments of the United States, Denmark and Greenland may officially sign an agreement to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic during the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York next week.
Relevant parliamentary procedures must be completed before the agreement can enter into force. The full text of the agreement has not yet been released.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the deal, saying it would strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, while preserving Denmark's sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination.
Ms. Frederiksen said, "I am pleased that we are going to conclude an important agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States. She said that the agreement will strengthen common security in the region and is good for NATO and Europe. She said in particular that the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of self-determination of the people of Greenland."
Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen also welcomed the proposed agreement. "It is encouraging that we are going to reach an agreement that will ensure and strengthen the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western Alliance," he said.
He said the agreement recognizes "Greenland's interests and our place in international cooperation" and is "in the interest of all of us." Under the agreement, the United States will have permanent access to Greenland, the right to establish military bases and the use of airspace, while non-NATO countries will be prevented from establishing a military presence on the island. According to US officials, the agreement will also ensure that Greenland remains part of the North American Strategic Defense Area.
Mr Trump has described the deal as giving the US "permanent control" over Greenland's security, but the proposed deal would not transfer sovereignty over the region to the US. Denmark and Greenland have clarified that the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of self-determination of the people of Greenland.
