Bangalore and Hyderabad clash to kick off IPL with a bang today

Awaz E Bihar•27 March 2026 at 04:26 pm•0 views•4 min read

It is said that cricket is a 'gentleman's game', but on the other hand, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a colorful carnival where these same 'gentlemen' sometimes display childlike enthusiasm. This scene will be witnessed again at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, when defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Sunrisers Hyderabad.

RCB has begun a new era under new ownership. The franchise, which was bought by Vijay Mallya for 450 crores in 2008, has grown exponentially over the years and is now worth over 16,500 crores. It is currently owned by the Aditya Birla Group, which includes the Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures, and Blackstone. This deal underscores the growing commercial importance of the IPL and attaches extraordinary expectations to the team, both on and off the field.

However, wealth and trophies cannot entirely erase the bitter memories of the past. Last year, when RCB finally broke their curse and won the IPL title, the celebration was marred by a tragic incident. The joy was dampened by a stampede outside the stadium, which resulted in the loss of 11 lives, and the authorities faced severe criticism and questions. Following the incident, the entry points to the stadium were rebuilt, crowd control measures were strengthened, and emergency protocols were improved. It is hoped that lessons have been learned, and fans will be able to cheer for their team without fear, while also enjoying better facilities.

On the field, the Chinnaswamy Stadium is a batsman's paradise. The pitch is extremely flat and fast, and the boundaries are relatively short, making it easy for the ball to sail into the air. The importance of the toss remains, but a clever bowler or an aggressive batsman can change the course of the match in just a few overs. RCB's batting line-up is led by Virat Kohli, who is a nightmare for bowlers due to his impeccable timing, lightning-quick footwork, and ability to accelerate the innings when needed. Faf du Plessis and Tim David are explosive at the top, while Rajat Patidar and Venkatesh Iyer provide stability to the middle order and excel under pressure.

Jitesh Sharma not only keeps wickets but also has the ability to finish innings effectively, while Kunal Pandya and Romario Shepherd are all-rounders who can turn the match on its head at any moment. The absence of Yash Dayal and Josh Hazlewood will be a challenge in the bowling department. In their absence, the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the energetic Navdeep Saini and Suyash Sharma will have to take on additional responsibility to pick up early wickets and restrict the run rate.

On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Ishan Kishan, will take to the field with a mix of aggressive and unpredictable cricket. The opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma can change the complexion of the match in just a few overs. At number three, Heinrich Klaasen bats with a beautiful blend of power and strategy, while Liam Livingstone, Nithish Reddy, and Aniket Verma can play big shots in the middle and lower middle order.

The absence of Pat Cummins has created a void in the bowling department, putting pressure on Jaydev Unadkat and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar to deliver early successes; Harshal Patel and Harsh Dubey will have to curb the run rate in the middle overs. As an 'impact player', Zeeshan Ansari, if he gets his chance early, can play a crucial role in turning the match. The team's success will depend on how quickly they find their form in bowling and how successfully they chase or set big targets on the back of their explosive batting.

In short, this season's opening match is not just a cricket match but a unique blend of capital, emotions, organization, grandeur, and history. RCB has a slight advantage due to their balanced team, home ground, and bowling depth, but Sunrisers Hyderabad's aggressive ability makes it an exciting contest. Ultimately, better strategy, stronger nerves, and a bit of luck will decide the winner. The match will start at 7:30 pm Indian time.
