Patna, September 27 (ABN) Amid continuous rains in Bihar and inflow of water from Nepal's aquifers, the water level of the Gandak, Kosi and Bagmati rivers is above the danger mark at many places. According to the data of the Water Resources Department of the Bihar government at 6 am on September 27, apart from Gandak and Kosi, the water level of the river has crossed the danger mark at some monitoring points of the Bagmati. According to the department, the water level of Gandak river at Dumaria Ghat in Gopalganj-Sudholia was recorded at 63.00 m, which is 0.78 m above the danger mark of 62.22 m. Here, the trend of increasing water level continues. Similarly, the water level of Kosi river at Baltara in Khagaria has reached 34.92 m, which is 1.07 m above the danger mark of 33.85 m. The water level is also rising here.
The situation is also sensitive in many places of Bagmati River. The river water level at Sonakhan in Sitamarhi is 68.60 m, which is 0.30 m above the danger mark of 68.30 m. In Muzaffarpur's Katonjha, the water level was recorded at 55.70 m, which is 0.70 m above the danger mark of 55.00 m. Meanwhile, the water level in Muzaffarpur's Beniabad is 49.72 meters, which is 1.04 meters above the danger mark of 48.68 meters. A rising trend in water level has been recorded at all these places.
Although the water level has been recorded around Sitamarhi Dam and Sheohar's Dabbadhar and Kesaria, the water there is around or below the danger mark.
Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Mr. Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said in a press conference held at the meeting hall of the Water Resources Department on Sunday that based on the water level recorded at the Devghat gauge site, about 80 km from the Valmikinagar barrage and Parinepal, around 5 lakh cusecs or more is expected at the barrage by evening. However, this is expected to be less than the maximum inflow of 5.62 lakh cusecs recorded in 2024. He said that all regional officers and engineers associated with Gandak river have been instructed to be on 24-hour alert mode in view of increased water flow. Additional engineers have been deployed on both the banks of the Sulfur to strengthen the monitoring and maintenance of the embankments.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that the engineers have been instructed to be vigilant and keep a close eye on the condition of the embankments. He clarified that any lapse in monitoring will be taken seriously and strict action will be taken.
Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Mr Chaudhary said that the water level of Ganga river is currently low. As a result smooth flow of water from Gandak to Ganga is achievable. It looks at the possibility of widespread water accumulation or reducing the risk of severe flooding.
