Conditions will not be met until the opening of the Hormuz: Iran

Awaz E Bihar•9 August 2026 at 03:57 pm•6 views•4 min read

Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Mohammad Baqer Zolghadr said that as long as the US does not meet Tehran's multiple conditions, Iran will not open the Strait of Hormuz. These conditions include the cessation of threats made to Iran.

According to Press TV, Zolghadr stated, "The Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until the US changes its behavior and stops threatening the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Other conditions outlined by the Iranian official include the cessation of military actions against Iran and its allies, the lifting of sanctions and naval blockade, the withdrawal of US forces from the region, and compensation payments.

US President Donald Trump had previously stated that he had called off an attack on Iran because a peace deal was near, which would include the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement on Iran's nuclear program.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Iran and Oman had agreed on the geographical details of a designated route for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that Iran is not currently holding direct talks with the US and is only exchanging messages through intermediaries. He added that negotiations cannot resume until Washington rectifies the violations it has made in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreed upon by both parties.

According to Iran's Mehr News Agency, Araqchi stated that intermediaries are still trying to pave the way for the resumption of negotiations, but Tehran believes that talks cannot resume until the US rectifies its violations.

He said that efforts to pave the way for negotiations are ongoing, but he reiterated that as long as the US does not correct its mistakes and violations, there is no possibility of restoring negotiations.

SNSC Secretary Mohammad Baqer Zolghadr said that before reopening the strategic waterway, the US must change its hostile approach. In a statement carried by Iranian state media, Zolghadr said, "As long as the US does not reform its behavior, the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened."

Key Iranian demands include the lifting of the US naval blockade, the withdrawal of US military forces, the cessation of military actions against Iran and its allies, and the lifting of sanctions. Iran has also called for the removal of war damages and the unconditional transfer of frozen Iranian assets abroad.

Zolghadr added that the US must stop threatening Iran and issuing insulting statements about the country's sacred sites. He said these demands reflect the Iranian people's stance after months of war. "These are the demands of the Iranian people, which they have strongly expressed by standing in fields and streets for 160 days."

The statement comes as Iranian and Omani authorities are negotiating to finalize arrangements for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world's most important energy passageways.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that Tehran is close to reaching an agreement with Oman on the transportation of goods through the strait. However, he warned that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will depend on additional conditions, including corrective measures by the US regarding the violation of the June agreement.

Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described the negotiations as "positive and constructive." On the other hand, the US and Iran have sent mixed signals about the talks. US Vice President Jay Dee Vines said that Iranian authorities have told the US that they have no intention of keeping the strait closed.

According to Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, lawmakers have largely agreed to the proposed framework with Oman, but final approval is still pending.

The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a key strategic and political leverage for Iran in the current crisis. A significant portion of the world's oil supply passes through the strait, and a prolonged closure could have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only the region but also the global energy market.

Mohammad Baqer Zolghadr said that Iran's Supreme National Security Council will remain firm in its stance on both military and diplomatic levels.
