The Middle East war has now begun to spread to neighboring countries. A recent attack by Iran on Kuwait's key infrastructure has severely affected a major center for electricity and water supply, according to Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity and Water. The target of Iranian aggression was a plant that desalinated seawater and provided electricity, with the central building and technical equipment suffering heavy damage, raising concerns about supply disruptions. Kuwaiti authorities said that technical and emergency teams have immediately arrived at the scene to restore the plant's operations.
Kuwait has been under constant attack for the past month in the context of the ongoing US-Israel-Iran war. According to Arab media, Iran has not yet claimed responsibility for this specific attack and has not issued an official statement.
The attack occurred at a time when oil prices in the global market have exceeded $116 per barrel, and such attacks could further disrupt the supply chain. Kuwait's state media has described the attack as a blatant violation of international laws. Analysts say that Kuwait is becoming an involuntary part of the conflict due to the presence of US military bases and the recent war situation.
According to official statistics, Iran has launched at least 5,471 missile and drone attacks since February 28, targeting US bases and key locations in seven Arab countries. As Tehran's retaliatory actions continue to justify US-Israeli attacks, several sensitive locations in Gulf countries have also been targeted, resulting in human casualties and infrastructure damage, disrupting global markets and aviation.
The affected countries' ministries of defense and government information centers have reported that the United Arab Emirates has been the most affected. The UAE's Ministry of Defense said that its defense systems have intercepted or destroyed 414 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,914 drones since the start of the attacks. Kuwait said it has intercepted 309 ballistic missiles and 616 drones. Bahrain's Defense Force General Command said that 174 missiles and 391 drones have been neutralized during the same period. Qatar's Ministry of Defense reported that the country has faced 206 ballistic missiles and 93 drone attacks. Jordan's army said that 262 missiles and drone attacks have been recorded during the conflict. Saudi Arabia said that at least 52 missiles and 1,006 drones have targeted its territory. Oman said it has been hit by 19 drone attacks.
Regional tensions have been ongoing since Israel and the US launched an attack on Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 deaths, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries with US military bases, causing human casualties and infrastructure damage, disrupting global markets and aviation.
Iran has blamed Israel for the attack on the desalination plant in Kuwait. The Iranian military's Operational Command, Khatam al-Anbia, issued a statement saying that Israel was behind the attack on the desalination plant in Kuwait. The statement added that Israel's recent attack was an excuse to blame Iran, reflecting the Israeli government's brutal aggression and the Zionist occupiers' meanness.
Prior to this, it was reported that the Iranian attack on Kuwait had severely damaged the plant. Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity said in a statement that a service building had suffered heavy damage due to Iranian aggression. The statement said that immediate technical and emergency teams have arrived at the scene to repair the damage and restore the plant's normal operations.
In the Israeli city of Haifa, missile debris fell on an oil refinery, affecting industrial buildings and fuel tanks. Iran launched its 86th wave of missile attacks, targeting the Haifa oil refinery again, causing a fire to break out at the refinery, with smoke billowing into the air. An Israeli chemical factory in the industrial zone was also targeted, and a missile attack on Tel Aviv forced the Israeli parliament to postpone its session.
The Israeli military has confirmed that 261 soldiers have been injured since the start of the war, but has not disclosed the number of fatalities. According to the Israeli fire service, the missile was destroyed in the air, but its debris fell within the refinery compound, directly damaging a tanker and causing smoke to rise from a nearby building. Firefighters are possibly searching for people trapped under the debris.
Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen said that the refinery's production facilities are secure and fuel supplies will not be disrupted. On the other hand, the Iranian judiciary has sentenced two individuals to death on charges of affiliation with an opposition group and planning attacks, saying that the two were planning armed attacks using homemade launch devices in Tehran.
