Patna (ABN) Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has directed the Water Resources Department to lift water from the Ganges River near Sultan Ganj during the flood season (July to October) and store it in the Badua Lake and Khargpur Lake, providing irrigation facilities according to their storage capacity. He said that this will greatly facilitate irrigation for farmers.
The Chief Minister said that by lifting water from the Ganges River and storing it in the Badua Lake, water can be accumulated in the Pheldumar, Madhyagiri, and Balasi areas of the Pheldumar block in Banka district. With the implementation of this scheme, irrigation facilities can be ensured in a total area of 45,850 hectares in Banka, Bhagalpur, and Munger districts through the Badua Lake, and in a total area of 5,310 hectares in Munger district through the Khargpur Lake.
Additionally, 100% irrigation facility can be ensured in the entire command area of 4,204 hectares in the Pheldumar and Amarpur blocks of Banka district from the Madhyagiri and Balasi lakes in the Pheldumar block. It is clear that due to climate change and erratic rainfall, the water storage capacity of the Badua Lake in Banka district and the Khargpur Lake in Munger district has decreased by 39.78% and 69.59%, respectively.
As a result, the irrigation target of 51,160 hectares from these lakes is not being met, and irrigation is only being provided to 19,136 hectares. The irrigation target set from these water reservoirs is not being fulfilled. Therefore, by expanding the Ganga Water Lifting Scheme, a plan is being made to lift 15.02 million cubic meters of water from the detention tank being constructed in the Bejekhwora Irrigation Colony with the help of 03 motor pumps and store it in the Pheldumar, Madhyagiri, and Balasi lakes through a 26.00 km long pipeline with a diameter of 0.90 meters and a 1.5 km long pipeline with a diameter of 0.50 meters, with an estimated cost of Rs 174.5208 crore.
To solve the above problem, a scheme is being implemented at a cost of Rs 1866.11 crore to ensure irrigation facilities by lifting water from the Ganges River near Sultan Ganj during the flood season (July to October) and storing it in the Badua Lake and Khargpur Lake according to their storage capacity. The Chief Minister has directed that these projects be completed soon so that farmers can benefit from them.
