RCB makes royal entry: becomes IPL's first team to book playoff spot

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Royal Challengers Bangalore continued their winning streak, defeating Punjab Kings by 23 runs and becoming the first team to qualify for the playoffs. With this win, Bangalore has almost secured its place in the top two of the points table. Batting first, RCB scored a mountainous 222 runs in the allotted overs, losing four wickets. The experienced batsman continued his impressive form, scoring 58 runs off 37 balls to complete his 67th IPL half-century.

Venkatesh Iyer, who was promoted to number four in the absence of Rajat Patidar, made the most of the opportunity, scoring an unbeaten 73 runs off just 40 balls, including eight fours and four sixes. Towards the end, Tim David played a aggressive cameo, scoring 28 runs off 12 balls to take the score beyond 220.

Facing the devastating bowling of Bhuvneshwar and Rashik, Punjab Kings struggled from the start in their pursuit of 223 runs and could only manage 199 runs for eight wickets. Bhuvneshwar, a contender for the Purple Cap, broke Punjab's back by dismissing both openers in the power play, conceding 38 runs for two wickets. Rashik Salam Dar was lethal with the ball, picking up three crucial wickets, including that of captain Shreyas Iyer, for 36 runs.

For Punjab, Shashank Singh (56) put up a valiant resistance, but lack of support from the other end meant he couldn't take his team to victory. While Bangalore has sealed its spot in the playoffs, the road ahead has become difficult for Punjab Kings. After their sixth consecutive defeat, Punjab not only needs to win its last match but also depends on the results of other teams.
