Venezuela's Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to assume the role of interim president immediately after the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro in a US military operation late on Saturday. In a statement broadcast via VTV, Rodriguez said "In view of the extraordinary circumstances arising from the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro, it is ordered that the Executive Vice President of the Republic assume and exercise all powers, duties, and functions as interim, so that she ensures the powers, duties, and functions of the President's office." Under Articles 233 and 234 of the Venezuelan Constitution, there are provisions that allow the Vice President to assume presidential duties in the event of the President's temporary or absolute absence. Delcy Rodriguez, who oversees the ministries of treasury and oil, has been working in the role since Saturday afternoon. Hours after Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were taken into custody, 56-year-old Rodriguez presided over a meeting of the National Defense Council, which was also attended by ministers and top officials. She demanded the "immediate release" of the kidnapped president and his wife, condemning the US action as a "flagrant violation of international law and Venezuela's sovereignty." She urged Venezuelans to reject the operation and demand that Latin American governments condemn it. The Supreme Court said it rejects and condemns the serious military aggression by the US against the people and territory of Venezuela, as well as the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife. It further stated that the US move, aimed at seizing Venezuela's strategic resources, is a flagrant violation of Venezuela's Constitution and laws, as well as international law and the UN Charter. The court said it stands with the Venezuelan people in defense of national independence and sovereignty and called on all parties to make joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Elon Musk announced on social media platform X that free internet service will be provided to Venezuela starting February 3. Sharing a post from his satellite internet company Starlink, he said the move aims to ensure uninterrupted connectivity in Venezuela. The announcement comes at a time when Venezuela is facing a severe political and military crisis. Following the recent US operation, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been arrested and transferred to the US, raising concerns about the country's communication and administrative systems. In this context, US President Donald Trump has taken the stance that Venezuela's administrative system will be under US supervision until a government change in the country.
