Against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Iran and the US, American President Donald Trump has revealed that direct talks are underway between the two countries, however, he warned that the region could face severe consequences if no agreement is reached.
Speaking to journalists at the White House, Trump said: "We are talking to them right now, we are talking to Iran. If we can make a deal, that's great, and if we can't, perhaps something bad will happen."
He further added: "Our ships are heading to Iran now, big ships, the best and the greatest. We are talking to Iran, let's see how it works out."
Tensions between Tehran and Washington have been escalating. The arrival of a US aircraft carrier and its accompanying warships in the Middle East has increased the possibility that Trump could decide on military action, especially after threats made by Iranian authorities to deal with protests.
Although Trump has not yet acted on his threats of intervention against Iran, he later demanded concessions from Iran regarding its nuclear program. Both countries have expressed willingness to resume diplomatic negotiations to resolve the long-standing nuclear dispute.
Regarding another issue, Trump said that the US administration may soon announce some good news regarding efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
He said: "I think we are making good progress with Ukraine and Russia. This is the first time I am saying it. I think we may have some good news."
Meanwhile, Trump confirmed that Mexico will stop sending oil to Cuba, while the US had threatened to impose sanctions on countries that supply oil to the communist island nation.
During a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump said: "Cuba is a failed state. Mexico will stop sending oil there."
He further added: "I think we are close to a deal, but we are currently talking to the Cuban leadership, however, he did not provide further details.
