Trump announced a new 50 percent auto tariff on Canada starting January 1

Awaz E Bihar•25 August 2026 at 02:34 pm•28 views•5 min read

US President Donald Trump has said he will double tariffs on cars and trucks imported from Canada, while tariffs on auto parts will also be imposed in 2027. The move is the latest attempt to increase pressure on Ottawa after trade talks between the two countries failed last week. Trump said on Monday that tariffs on Canadian cars and steel would be raised to 50 percent starting Jan. 1. These would be in addition to the 50 percent tariffs imposed on Saturday, which were imposed after trade talks between the two countries failed. Since steel already has a 50 percent tariff, it is unclear what Trump meant. He also announced a 50 percent tariff on auto parts, which previously had no tariff. Trump wrote on his social media platform 'Truth Social, Make in America and there will be no tariff'. Canada will no longer be treated like a state! He added, Canada is among the worst countries in the world to do business with in terms of trade and other matters. They consider themselves entitled to it, even though we don't need Canada, they need us! US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant told reporters on Monday that Trump wants Canada to come to the negotiating table and negotiate in good faith. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said during a press conference in Quebec on Monday that a mutually beneficial agreement with the US is possible, but it is necessary that the US respect Canadian sovereignty. "When the Americans come to the negotiating table with the right attitude towards our industry and the spirit of true partnership, we will surely come to the negotiating table," he said while announcing the investment in the icebreaker ships.
Premier Doug Ford of Ontario, home to the bulk of Canada's auto industry, told The Associated Press that Trump had declared war, an economic war, against his closest friend and ally. Ford referred to former US President Ronald Reagan, saying that Reagan opposed tariffs and that Trump kept a picture of the late president near his desk. And they would be changing the crotch in the grave. Ford added that Trump should probably take Reagan's picture off the wall and put it somewhere else because Ronald Reagan would have been disgusted with President Trump. Ford warned that everything was under consideration if the conflict escalated, including cutting off electricity and vital minerals from Ontario to the United States. He called on Canada to consider using oil and potash for pressure as well. "I'll stop them," Ford said of the key minerals. You won't get a grain of sand from Ontario.
"We provide electricity to 1.5 million homes and businesses in America," he said. Everything is under consideration. I will do whatever I have to do. If Trump continues to try to destroy Canadian industrial production, he better have a pack of batteries with him. Trump responded to Ford's statement on 'Truth Social,' saying that Doug Ford is making a lot of noise and Canada should remember that most of the electricity, oil and gas that Canada receives comes through the United States. He added that someone must force these jokers to fall into line, or the consequences for Canada will be far more dire. Canada has consistently been one of America's two largest trading partners. Trade in goods and services between the two countries totaled $872.3 billion last year, down 4.6 percent from the previous year. Canada sends more than three-quarters of its total exports to the U.S., while it receives nearly half of its imports from the U.S. The U.S. auto industry is closely integrated with Canada and Mexico, so the new tariffs could have a severe impact on U.S. production. Flavio, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association of Canada The U.S. tariff on Canadian auto parts will be paid by the U.S. auto assembly industry, Volpe said. Without those specific parts, vehicle assembly across the U.S. would come to a halt. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for more details on the proposed tariffs. Canadian government representatives also did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The two countries failed to reach a trade deal Friday night and both blamed each other for the failure. Canada prepared retaliatory tariffs on certain US goods in response to Trump's 50 percent tariffs on other Canadian products.
Canada has said it will impose tariffs on some U.S. goods beginning Sept. 8 in response to Trump's 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. When asked if Canada had entered a trade war with the U.S., Carney said Saturday, "When you're attacked, you're at war." We are under attack. Three out of four Canadians supported Carney's decision to withdraw from trade talks with the U.S. on Friday night, according to a public opinion poll released Sunday by the Angus Reid Institute. Shares of auto companies also fell after the earnings announcement. Shares of Ford and Stellenbosch fell 3.2 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively, on Monday, while shares of General Motors fell 1.1 percent. Toyota shares were down 1.5 percent and Honda shares were down 2.1 percent in New York.
