According to the Iranian presidential media office, President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a statement on Tuesday that Tehran wants to keep the diplomatic path open, although there is a lack of trust in Washington. He emphasized that Iran must consolidate its military achievements on the battlefield in the diplomatic field as well.
Earlier, Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker and senior negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned the United States that if it does not accept the conditions included in Tehran's 14-point proposal, it will face failure.
This statement comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's response to the recent US proposal. Trump said last night that the fragile ceasefire in effect since April 8 is now "on a ventilator".
Iran, in its response, had refused to make any concessions on its nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz issue.
According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Tehran has demanded an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, and guarantees for the return of frozen Iranian assets abroad.
Sources said the US proposal included a one-page memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the fighting and establishing a framework for nuclear talks within 30 days.
The biggest difference between Washington and Tehran remains over the stockpile of highly enriched uranium. The US is insisting that Iran transfer the material out of the country, but Tehran has rejected the demand.
Iran has emphasized its right to peaceful use of nuclear energy, saying that talks can be held on the level of enrichment. Iran has restricted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, causing concern in global markets, while the US has maintained a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
According to Akbarzadeh, the Strait of Hormuz has now become a key strategic and military region, stretching from Jask in the east to Serri Island in the west.
A report said that after tensions began with the US and Israel, Iran is announcing its second expansion in the Strait of Hormuz's area of influence.
On May 4, the IRGC Navy released a map showing parts of the coastal strip adjacent to the Gulf of Oman in the United Arab Emirates as a new control zone.
According to the map, the zone stretches from Iran's Mubarak Mountain and the Emirati city of Fujairah in the east to Iran's Qeshm Island and the Emirati state of Umm Al Quwain in the west.
Iranian news agencies Fars News Agency and Tasnim News Agency reported that the width of the Strait of Hormuz is now estimated to be 200 to 300 miles, compared to previous estimates of 20 to 30 miles.
Tasnim News Agency claimed that the expanded area has now taken the shape of a "complete crescent".
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have not responded to a request for comment from the Reuters news agency.
