Congress has accused the Modi government of ruining the country's economy and breaking the trust of investors, stating that it has failed to stop the weakening of the rupee and the selling by foreign investors, which is causing losses to common investors in the share market.
Congress spokesperson Shakti Singh Gohil said on Tuesday at the party headquarters that every citizen of the country is worried under the Modi government. Youth, farmers, and small traders are all anxious. Farmers and youth burdened by debt are committing suicide every day. Lakhs of positions remain vacant, but no recruitment is taking place. Wherever a vacancy is announced, the exam paper leaks, and the government's favorites benefit from it.
Mr. Gohil said that when the Congress government was formed in 1991, the country's economy was in a severe crisis, and at that time, the country's gold was pledged abroad. Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister at the time, and he initiated economic reforms keeping India's interests in mind. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were given access to the Indian market, which led to an inflow of foreign investment and strengthened the economy. Today, the situation is the opposite. Foreign investors are pulling their money out of the Indian market. There has been a continuous trend of FII selling and negative momentum so far this year. He asked why this is happening now when it has never happened before, and why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not answering this question.
He stated that the Modi government made grand claims regarding the share market and appealed to people to invest in it. On the day it was said that the share market would go up, the Sensex was at 85,836, but on September 29, 2026, it fell to approximately 72,500. He said that this has reduced the value of the capital invested by the public, and people also had to pay taxes on it.
Mr. Gohil said that when Dr. Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister, there was a global recession, but its impact was not allowed to affect India. He said that during the UPA government's tenure, the Sensex increased by approximately 398 percent despite the global recession.
He said that today, the rupee is weakening and approaching 100 per dollar. The question is why the Prime Minister is silent on this, and why Foreign Institutional Investors are pulling out money every day. He also asked that when the price of crude oil was $140 per barrel during the Congress government, petrol and diesel were not as expensive, so why are fuel prices so high today despite ethanol and blending?
He also targeted the government regarding the Election Commission, stating that the law was changed to win elections, the Chief Justice was excluded, and Amit Shah was included, and Gyanesh Kumar was placed in the Election Commission. He said that the BJP has put in full effort to win the elections, but despite this, people raised their voices. The Congress spokesperson said regarding former Supreme Court Justice Nariman that approximately 9 million voters were deprived of their right to vote, and despite this, it was not considered sufficient to stop the Supreme Court from hearing the Special Leave Petition (SLP). He said that in the appeals against the cutting of votes, the votes of 93 percent of the people were found to be valid.
The Congress spokesperson asked the Prime Minister who will take responsibility for the heavy losses incurred by those who invested in the market after being appealed to invest in the share market in 2024?
