Defeat of BJP on bill in Parliament is the beginning of downfall of Modi government: Mamata Banerjee

Awaz E Bihar•18 April 2026 at 03:53 pm•3 views•2 min read

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) defeat in the Parliament on the delimitation bill marks the beginning of the end of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. She said the BJP is conspiring with the country's states to reschedule Lok Sabha seats for political gain, which the opposition has collectively foiled.

Addressing an election rally in Howrah district, Banerjee said that despite elections being held in West Bengal, TMC MPs reached Parliament and voted against the bill. She said her party played a crucial role in the opposition alliance.

Mamata Banerjee alleged that under the pretext of the women's reservation bill, the central government actually wants to push forward its delimitation agenda. She claimed that the BJP wants to increase the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats to around 850 to tilt the political landscape in its favor.

She said that despite running an election campaign in West Bengal, she was asked to send 20 MPs, but she sent 21 MPs to Delhi. She said this was part of the strategy to defeat the BJP, and the opposition has defeated the BJP in Parliament.

The Chief Minister said that after the defeat in Parliament, the BJP will now have to face defeat at the grassroots level as well. She claimed that Bengal always shows the way to the country, and this time too, a campaign will start in Bengal to oust the BJP from power.

Mamata Banerjee said that her party is in favor of women's rights and reservation, but will not support any policy that divides the country. She also accused the BJP of spreading misleading propaganda and lies.

She appealed to workers and supporters to ensure the TMC's victory in West Bengal and send a strong message to the BJP.
