The continuous rise in water levels in the Ganga and Kosi rivers has increased the risk of flooding in the coastal areas of Nogachhia sub-division. The river water has now reached very close to the embankments, causing concern among people living in low-lying areas. However, the Water Resources Department claims that all embankments are currently completely safe and the situation is under control. According to official data available till 6 am on Tuesday, the rise in the Kosi river at J.B. Chauraha is the most alarming. Here, the water level of the Kosi has increased by 5 centimeters to 30.85 meters, which is 8 centimeters more than the warning level (30.77 meters). The danger mark here is 31.77 meters. Due to the rising water, the water level has started touching the embankments at several places. In Madhavani, there has been a 9-centimeter rise in the Kosi river, where the river is flowing at 30.12 meters. The Ganga river has also seen a rapid rise in the last 24 hours. At Ismailpur-Band Tola, the Ganga is flowing at 30.43 meters, which is an increase of 13 centimeters. The warning level here is 30.60 meters and the danger mark is 31.60 meters. The water of the Ganga has reached the toe (lower part) of the embankment. Additionally, a significant rise of 20 centimeters has been recorded in the Ganga river at Raghupur, taking the water level to 31.45 meters. It is a relief that the Kazikoria-Raghupur marginal dam is still safe. Seeing the horrific form of the river, the administration has become fully alert. Departmental officers and engineers have been directed to remain alert for 24 hours. Considering the water pressure, patrolling along the embankments has been intensified in sensitive areas such as Ismailpur-Band Tola, Raghupur, and J.B. Chauraha. The administration says that if the sequence of rising water levels continues, the pressure on the dams may increase, and all necessary precautionary and safety measures are being taken to deal with it.
