India face test to save series, Ireland one step away from historic win

Awaz E Bihar•27 June 2026 at 04:18 pm•1 views•4 min read

Belfast, T20 World Champions India will take to the field at the Civil Service Cricket Club on Sunday with the intention of saving the series against Ireland in the second and final T20 International, while the host team is just one step away from a historic victory.

It was expected that India would gain a one-sided advantage in the two-match series after winning the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, but Ireland achieved a 34-run victory in the first match, presenting a memorable performance in their cricket history. This was Ireland's first win against India in a T20 International, after which they have come close to winning a series against India for the first time.

After this defeat, pressure has increased on Captain Shreyas Iyer and his team. India's batting stumbled despite a good start in pursuit of the 183-run target, and the entire team was bowled out for 148 runs in 18.5 overs. Abhishek Sharma scored 49 runs aggressively in just 20 balls, but Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, and Tilak Varma could not show a commendable performance.

In Indian bowling, Harshit Rana, returning after four months, took three wickets for 24 runs, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel dismissed two players each. However, the Indian bowlers failed to control Ireland's middle order.

Now, this series has become a test of character for the Indian team. Another defeat will not only give Ireland their first T20 series win against India, but it will also be one of the most disappointing bilateral series defeats for the current world champions in recent years.

The Indian team management is considering changes to the playing eleven. Young batsman Vibhu Suryavanshi, who was on the bench in the first match, may be included in the team this time to strengthen the opening batting. Fast bowler all-rounder Suryansh Shedge is also being considered a strong alternative to improve the team's balance.

On the other hand, Ireland will take to the field with full confidence after the glorious victory in the first match. Captain Lorcan Tucker played a responsible innings of 50 runs in 36 balls after a cautious start, while Gareth Delany scored 49 runs aggressively in 32 balls. Thanks to George Dockrell's useful innings in the final overs, Ireland set a challenging score of 182 runs for nine wickets.

Debutant bowlers Matt Hollard and Jay Mondal changed the course of the match. Hollard took three important wickets, including Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, while Mondal's excellent bowling kept the Indian middle order in constant trouble.

Ireland's organized fielding and fearless approach presented a picture of a team whose confidence is constantly growing, and if they succeed on Sunday as well, it will be one of the biggest victories in their cricket history.

There is a possibility of overcast and cold weather at Stormont, which could help fast bowlers in the initial overs. However, batting will become easier after the ball gets old, so the power play and final overs may prove to be the decisive stages of the match. Considering recent competitions, a score of around 170 runs in the first innings is also being considered challenging.

Although the defeat in the first match was a major setback for India, they still have one of the strongest T20 batting line-ups in the world and are expected to perform more organized and responsibly. On the other hand, Ireland has proven that it has the ability to compete with the world champion team in every department and is hopeful of another historic victory.

For India, Sunday's match will be a test not only of leveling the series but also of restoring their reputation, maintaining the dignity of being a world champion, and avoiding one of the biggest upset defeats in recent T20 cricket.

Possible Squad:
India: Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Tilak Varma, Vibhu Suryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Sanju Samson (Wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper), Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.
