Kylian Mbappe overtakes Lionel Messi in Golden Boot race

Awaz E Bihar•19 July 2026 at 04:33 pm•13 views•2 min read

In the match played on Saturday for the third place against England, France suffered a defeat of six goals to four, but French star footballer Kylian Mbappe overtook Argentine great Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. In this thrilling playoff match, Mbappe scored his 21st and 22nd goals, surpassing Lionel Messi to become one of the top scorers in FIFA World Cup history. The first half was extremely disappointing for France and the team was trailing 4-0 at the end of the initial 45 minutes. However, Mbappe's goal in the 48th minute gave the French team hope for a comeback. Then Bradley Barcola reduced England's lead by scoring two goals, while France's captain Mbappe scored another goal in the 66th minute to make the match more exciting. Didier Deschamps' team also scored a fourth goal, but England's Bukayo Saka's hat-trick did not give France a chance to equalize, while Jude Bellingham's sixth goal made this match one of the most memorable in World Cup history.

39-year-old Lionel Messi, who is playing his sixth World Cup, now has the opportunity to regain this honor from Mbappe on Sunday while leading his team in the final against Spain.

After the match, Mbappe told the media, "Leo always scores goals. I'm sure he'll score tomorrow too. My effort is just to help my team by scoring in every match. It's true that when you score so many goals in the World Cup, you achieve a different status, but for me, the real importance is the team's success."

In response to a question, he said, "If I had to choose, I would prefer to play in the World Cup final rather than becoming the all-time top scorer. However, this honor is also important, and I would be happy if people consider me one of the great players in football history."
