Nitish Kumar resigns from membership of Legislative Council

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has resigned from the membership of the Legislative Council on Monday (30 March) after being elected as a Rajya Sabha member. JDU leader and Bihar Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary said that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has already been elected to the Rajya Sabha, so resignation was necessary. Sanjay Gandhi, the JDU MLC, submitted Nitish Kumar's resignation to the Chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council. With Nitish Kumar's move, there is a possibility of a change of power in Bihar. However, there is no news of him resigning from the post of Chief Minister. Nitish Kumar has been a member of the Legislative Council since 2006 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 this month. The JDU chief is among the leaders who have been members of all four houses. Nitish Kumar had said during the Rajya Sabha election that he wished to be elected as a Rajya Sabha member, so he has taken this decision. It is clear that Nitish Kumar reached the assembly by winning the Harnaut assembly seat in 1985. After that, he was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha in 1989 and has been a member of the Legislative Council since 2006. Now, for the first time, he is going to start his new innings as a member of the Rajya Sabha. According to reports, he will take membership of the Rajya Sabha on April 10 next month. It is worth mentioning that Nitish Kumar has held important positions like Minister of Railways and Minister of Agriculture at the Center, he has made widespread reforms in the railways during his tenure. He has been leading the state as the Chief Minister of Bihar since 2005. He has established his identity as 'Sushasan Babu', introduced several projects that have been discussed across the country. Nitish Kumar has taken decisions like prohibition, cycle scheme, and 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj. Mr. Choudhary said while talking to journalists that when a leader is elected to the Rajya Sabha, he has to resign from his current membership of the Assembly or Legislative Council within a specified period. He said it is a constitutional requirement and the Chief Minister is fulfilling this responsibility. The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, in response to a question about Mr. Kumar's continuation as Chief Minister, said that any step regarding resignation from the post of Chief Minister will be taken in full compliance with the constitutional provisions.
