Patna, 30 April (ABN) Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in-charge Surya Kumar Sharma (Arvind Sharma) filed his nomination papers on Thursday for the 2026 by-election to the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC). Mr. Sharma has filled the nomination for the seat that fell vacant after senior BJP leader Mangal Pandey's resignation. It is worth mentioning that Mangal Pandey was elected as a member of the legislative assembly from the Siwan seat in the Bihar assembly elections, after which he relinquished his membership in the legislative council. Given the ruling party's numerical strength in the house, Mr. Sharma's election is almost certain. On the occasion of filing the nomination, a large number of senior leaders and ministers of the NDA, including Samrat Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Sanjay Saraogi, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Mangal Pandey, Ram Kripal Yadav, and Santosh Kumar Suman, were present. Janata Dal United (JDU) leaders Sanjay Kumar Jha and Amish Singh Kushwaha also attended, as did Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Raju Tiwari and Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal leader Alok Kumar Singh. Before filing the nomination papers, Surya Kumar Sharma (Arvind Sharma) paid floral tributes to the statues of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya and Kailash Pati Mishra at the BJP state office and paid homage to them. On being made the NDA candidate, Mr. Sharma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, National President Natin Nabhin, and other senior leaders, including the leadership of the allied parties. He said he would make every effort to live up to the trust that the leadership has reposed in him. Remembering the senior leaders of the BJP on this occasion, Mr. Arvind Sharma said that it is due to their tireless efforts and sacrifices that the BJP has become the world's largest party today. He thanked all the state officials and workers of the party, saying that the party has given him everything he never imagined. Meanwhile, it has been decided that a by-election will be held on May 12 for another seat of the Legislative Council (MLC) from the Bhojpur-Buxar local body constituency. The Janata Dal United (JDU) has nominated Kanhaya Prasad as its candidate for this seat. This seat was vacated after Radha Charan Shah was elected as an MLA from the Sondesh assembly constituency. Both polling and counting for this election will be completed on May 12. The total number of members of the Bihar Legislative Council is 75, out of which 63 are elected and 12 are nominated. After former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha and resigned, one seat in the council fell vacant. In addition to Mr. Kumar's seat, the term of nine other members of the council is ending on June 28. The members whose term is ending on June 28 include current Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and JDU leader Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha.
