The Arrival of 2026 and the Accounting of the Previous Year

Awaz E Bihar•31 December 2025 at 12:49 pm•0 views•7 min read

Time is like a flowing river that neither stops for anyone nor looks back. Days, months, and years slip away from our hands in this flow, and we only realize it when another year, with all its memories, experiences, successes, and failures, becomes a part of the past. The arrival of the new year is not just about changing a date on the calendar, but it's a moment that invites us to reflect, question ourselves, and honestly review our life's journey. Most of us welcome the new year with joy, wishes, and hopes, but we rarely take the trouble to account for the past year, although this accounting plays a crucial role in determining the direction of the coming year.

Making plans, setting big goals, and making grand promises to ourselves have become a common trend at the start of a new year. Dreams of progress, success, and change are easily decorated on social media, in speeches, and in gatherings, but the consistency, hard work, and self-accounting required to turn these dreams into reality are often missing. Many people plan with enthusiasm, but their plans are relegated to the cold storage after a few days or weeks. Some individuals limit their purpose to mere ideas and desires, while others make a little effort and then return to their old ways.

On the contrary, those who move forward in life are the ones who, after setting their goals, persistently work towards achieving them, are not deterred by obstacles, and make continuous striving their motto, regardless of the outcomes. It's a fact that as a society, we only value efforts that appear to be successful. Those who face failure are often met with disappointment, ridicule, and neglect, whereas the truth is quite the opposite. According to intellectuals and psychologists, striving with genuine intent until the very end is a significant achievement in itself, regardless of immediate results.

The person who goes through the process of effort, regardless of the outcome, is far ahead of those who don't even take the first step due to fear of failure. Failure is actually the first lesson towards success, provided it's seen as an opportunity to learn rather than a cause for despair. Self-accounting requires us to look at the past year not superficially but seriously consider every aspect of it. We should ask ourselves honest questions: What significant events occurred in our lives, what were their positive or negative impacts, where did we make right decisions, and where did we slip up?

It's also essential to see how the challenges we faced changed our thinking, behavior, and personality. How balanced was our physical health, mental peace, and emotional state? What ups and downs did we experience in our professional journey and personal relationships? These questions make the process of self-accounting meaningful. At this stage, the most important thing is not to turn away from reality but to have the courage to face it, as facing the truth is the foundation of real change.

When we reflect on the experiences, lessons learned, and inner changes from the past year, we begin to see both our weaknesses and strengths clearly. This is the starting point of self-improvement. If we try to improve these changes in a better direction, not only can our personal lives improve, but our goals also become more clear and achievable. It's essential to consider the experiences of the past year before setting new year's goals so that we can plan realistically and avoid unnecessary mistakes.

After taking an unbiased review of the past year's successes, failures, and challenges, when we set goals for the new year, our decisions become more mature. Goals that are achievable and whose progress can be measured keep us motivated in practice. It's also necessary to regularly review our goals so that we can adapt to changing circumstances and maintain our pace. Essentially, self-accounting is a declaration that we don't want to leave our lives without direction but want to move forward with awareness, responsibility, and purpose.

Ultimately, we must understand that the true beauty of the new year is not in fireworks, slogans, or temporary enthusiasm but in the serious thought that motivates us to improve ourselves. The person who learns from their past and shapes their present is the one who can illuminate their future. An honest accounting of the past year is the most valuable capital for the coming year, and it makes a person not just a passer of time but a purposeful liver of life.

The real charm of life is not that a person never stumbles but that after every stumble, they can gather themselves and move forward with more awareness and courage. Time doesn't knock on the door repeatedly; it silently moves forward, giving us a new chance every year. It's up to us whether we let this opportunity slip away in negligence or make it a means of our improvement and betterment.

Those who turn their past into a file of regrets and complaints remain entangled in the present, while wise people use their past as a lantern to find their way through the darkness of the present. The process of self-accounting should not be limited to words or ideas but must be incorporated into practical life. If a person recognizes their shortcomings but doesn't make a serious effort to correct them, this accounting becomes a mere formal exercise.

The real advice is that which changes a person, making their behavior gentle, their decisions wise, and their actions consistent. The person who learns to account for themselves before pointing fingers at others stands in the courtroom of their conscience, and this attitude gives them moral height. The message of the new year is also to reevaluate our priorities. Many people in the race of life define success only by wealth, fame, or position, but these things prove temporary with time.

True success is that which is reflected in a person's character, honesty in dealings, and peace in behavior. If we spend the whole year in a rush but fail to become better humans, such success is also an empty shell. A person should not lose hope in themselves. Despair is the darkness that not only deprives the present of light but also swallows the hopes of the future. The one who understands that everything is not over yet is truly alive.

Every new day, every new year, gives us the opportunity to renew our intentions, strengthen our resolve, and find the courage to move forward despite our weaknesses. God has given humans the ability to err, but also the capacity for repentance and reform, and this is His greatest blessing. It should also be remembered that the process of change is not instantaneous. Those who dream of changing everything in one day often get tired and give up after a few days.

Wisdom lies in moving forward slowly but steadily. Small positive steps, minor but consistent improvements, and daily self-accounting collectively lay the foundation for significant change. The person who remains committed to this path finds that time itself starts making decisions in their favor. The true spirit of the new year is not to try to be better than others but to be better than our yesterday's self. If our character is better today than yesterday, our thinking is more positive, and our actions are more responsible, then this is the greatest success of our new year.

The purpose of life is not just to live but to live better, and this is only possible if we examine ourselves every year, every month, and every day. Therefore, let's make this new year an opportunity to open the doors of our heart and mind. Let's leave behind ego, negligence, and self-deception and make truth, humility, and hard work our companions. Remember, the person who has the courage to change themselves is the one who succeeds in the test of time, and the nation that learns from its past, improves its present, and illuminates its future with the lights of hope is the one that moves forward. This thought, this resolve, and this continuous self-accounting give a person not just life but a purposeful and dignified life.
