Chhapra: The flood situation in Saran district is getting serious. The protective embankment of the Mahi river broke in a width of about 10 to 12 feet near Kesharpur village of Trilok Chak Panchayat of Daghwara block late on Friday night. As soon as the dam broke, the rapid flow of the river entered the low-lying areas in the form of flood water. People did not even get a chance to recover due to the sudden inflow of water. After water entered dozens of houses, many families were forced to leave their houses in the dark and move to safer places.
After a big breach occurred in the protective dam of the Mahi river, the water rushed towards the residential areas and soon entered the houses. Due to this sudden calamity, many families could not save household goods, food grains and other essential items. A big challenge has arisen in front of the people to bring their cattle along with their families to safe places.
Dozens of villages in Daghwara block have been submerged due to the spread of flood water. Traffic has been affected due to water logging on the link roads connecting the villages to the block headquarters. Boats are now the only means of transportation in many areas. The administration has arranged for boats to the affected areas. The relief and rescue teams are taking the people trapped in the water to safe places and providing food items to the victims.
The flood water in Saran has now reached the main roads. The road near Dumri village on Hajipur-Ghazipur National Highway, NH-19 has also started getting waterlogged. Water reaching the national highway has increased the concern of passengers and vehicle owners. If the water level continues to rise like this, traffic on this route is likely to be affected. The administration and disaster response teams are continuously monitoring the situation.
The effect of boiling of Mahi river is also visible in Daryaopur block. Many families had to leave their homes after water entered more than 25 houses here. Many people have taken shelter on roadsides, embankments and other high places. The victims are seeking safe places with livestock, dry rations and essential supplies.
Floodwaters that rose from Friday night spread over large parts of the district by Saturday. Several villages in 11 blocks including Sonepur, Daghwara, Garkha, Chhapra Sadar, Revelganj, Manjhi, Pannapur, Teriya, Amanur, Parsa and Makir are under flood. The crisis has become more serious as the water reaches the new areas along with the already affected areas.
The biggest concern is for families whose homes have been flooded all around. Many people are forced to take shelter on scaffolding, roofs and high embankments. Amidst the struggle to save households, clean drinking water and health issues are also on the rise. Relief and rescue operations are being stepped up by the administration, but immediate relief to the large affected population remains a major challenge.
