The US demands Iran to halt uranium enrichment for 20 years, deadlock persists in negotiations

Awaz E Bihar•14 April 2026 at 04:07 pm•4 views•5 min read

The issue of uranium enrichment has emerged as the biggest hurdle in the talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad, where the US has demanded a halt to enrichment for 20 years. According to a report by the foreign website Axios, a US official said that the US has asked Iran to stop uranium enrichment for two decades. This demand was made during talks in Islamabad this week, in response to which the Iranian delegation proposed a relatively shorter period of about 10 years to stop enrichment.

According to sources, Iran's nuclear program, particularly uranium enrichment and existing stockpiles, has become the biggest obstacle to any possible deal. The US has also demanded that Iran move its excess enriched uranium stockpiles out of the country, while Iran has shown willingness to reduce the level of enrichment and accept a monitoring system instead.

A US official said that the doors of communication between Washington and Tehran are still open, and some progress has been made towards a deal. The report stated that after 21 hours of talks, US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz to increase pressure on Iran.

Regional sources said that Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are maintaining contact between the two countries to reduce differences and reach an agreement before the end of the ceasefire on April 21. Sources say that the parties agree that a deal is possible, and a new round of talks is expected soon. A regional source said that the talks were not completely unsuccessful, but rather the two sides are currently in the bargaining phase.

A US official also confirmed that if Iran shows more flexibility and accepts the proposals presented in Islamabad, a deal is still possible. Pakistan's Ambassador to Iran, Reza Amiri Moghaddam, also said that the talks were not unsuccessful, but rather provided a diplomatic path that can be moved forward with confidence and political will.

The main difference during the talks was on Iran's nuclear program, where the US demanded a halt to enrichment and the destruction of stockpiles, while Iran made the restoration of frozen financial assets a key condition. US President Donald Trump said in a statement on his social media platform "Truth Social" that Iran has suffered a major defeat and rejected a report by The New York Times, demanding an apology from the newspaper.

He clarified that the US will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances, and any deal will be based on this fundamental condition. Trump warned that if no agreement is reached by the end of the ceasefire, the situation could worsen for Iran, and tensions will persist.

Earlier, he had also warned that if Iran's fast boats try to break the US naval blockade, they will be destroyed immediately. In another statement, he claimed that the Iranian navy has suffered significant damage, and several ships have been destroyed, while US forces are maintaining strict surveillance at sea.

Trump said that shipping traffic is ongoing at the Strait of Hormuz, and the passage of 34 ships in one day is proof that the route is active. Speaking to journalists at the White House, he said that Iran wants to make a deal, but the US will not accept any agreement that allows Iran to possess nuclear weapons.

He added that nuclear talks have stalled, and control over ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz is being increased. Meanwhile, the chairman of the US Congress Intelligence Committee said that Trump has also warned China not to rearm Iran. The US has announced a blockade of Iranian ports, which came after the failure of talks in Islamabad, while Iran has termed it as maritime piracy.

Reports say that the US military is imposing maritime control in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, in the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz, under which ships entering without permission can be stopped, diverted, or detained. However, ships carrying food, medicine, and other essential items will be allowed to pass after a thorough inspection.

US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has reestablished contact and is eager to make a deal. According to details, US President Donald Trump has claimed that the Tehran administration is desperate to make a deal with the US and has been in contact with "the right people" in this regard.

Speaking to journalists in the Oval Office, President Trump revealed that there was contact from the right people regarding Iran this morning, and Iran has expressed a strong desire to make a deal. President Trump clarified that there is agreement on several issues with Iran, but Iranian authorities are still not willing to give up nuclear weapons.

He announced in a tough tone that the US has started a naval blockade of Iran and is closely monitoring the Strait of Hormuz, "we will not allow any country to blackmail or extort us." Discussing the global economy, President Trump said that the US now has more oil reserves than Saudi Arabia and Russia, which is why ships from around the world are turning to the US for oil.

He described US relations with China as excellent, criticizing The New York Times and other media outlets, and termed reports of Iran's alleged success as "fake news." President Trump praised the performance of his team in the Islamabad talks, saying that Vice President Mike Pence, Witkoff, and Kushner did an excellent job there.
