Water scarcity in Mumbai, 10 percent cut to be imposed from May 15, increasing population, public discontent

Awaz E Bihar•12 May 2026 at 04:49 pm•39 views•4 min read

The bride of the city, Mumbai, is once again seen standing at the brink of a severe water crisis. The Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that a 10 percent water cut will be imposed across Mumbai from May 15. According to the civic administration, this decision has been taken as a precautionary measure as the water level in the lakes that supply water to Mumbai has dropped to a dangerous level. The announcement has sparked concern among citizens, as the water shortage at the onset of summer has raised several questions about the future situation.

The BMC spokesperson said in a statement that citizens should not panic, but it is essential to adopt austerity in water usage. The administration has assured that the water supply will be maintained in an organized manner to minimize the difficulties faced by the public. However, residents of several areas claim that since the past few years, the water supply has been affected as soon as summer begins, while some areas are already receiving low-pressure water supply.

According to the civic administration, this decision has been taken in light of the guidelines of the Maharashtra government's water resources department and the meteorological department's forecast. Experts have expressed concerns that this year's monsoon may be weak due to the possible El Nino and the bipolar weather effects of the Indian Ocean. If the rainfall is below normal, a densely populated city like Mumbai may face a more severe situation.

According to statistics, as of Monday, only 340,399 million liters of water are available in the lakes that supply water to Mumbai, while the city's annual requirement is 1,447,363 million liters. This means that only 23.52 percent of the usable water stock is left. This is why the BMC is continuously monitoring the water reserves and trying to regulate the water supply on a limited scale.

The statement said that an additional 147,092 million liters of water will be provided from the Bhatsa reserve, while 90,000 million liters more will be supplied from the Upper Vaitarna dam. However, the civic administration has deemed the 10 percent water cut inevitable. This restriction will not be limited to Mumbai but will also be imposed on Thane, Bhivandi, and other suburban areas.

Experts and citizens' groups say that the water crisis in Mumbai is not just a result of climate change but also a consequence of years of poor planning, haphazard urban expansion, and a growing population. Every year, millions of people come to Mumbai in search of employment and a better future, putting immense pressure on the city's infrastructure. Unfortunately, the water supply system is not increasing at the same rate as the city's expansion.

One significant aspect of this crisis is the large-scale construction activities across the city. Thousands of residential and commercial projects are being built in Mumbai and its suburbs, requiring massive amounts of water. Citizens' groups allege that many areas are providing ample water to builders and construction projects, while ordinary citizens face water scarcity and low pressure. This is why citizens face severe difficulties during the months of May and June, and the administration is left with no option but to impose water cuts.

Social activists say that if water usage in construction projects is not regulated, the situation may worsen in the future. They claim that issues like illegal water connections, water wastage from pipelines, and water theft are also exacerbating the crisis. Several experts have emphasized the need to make construction companies use recycled water to reduce the pressure on drinking water.

Citizens' groups have demanded that the government and the BMC undertake long-term planning instead of just imposing temporary cuts. Plans to harvest rainwater, recycle water, build new lakes, repair pipelines, and promote water conservation awareness among the public have become essential. Otherwise, Mumbai will face a water crisis every year with the onset of summer.
