Patna: (ABN) Thousands of candidates staged a massive protest in the capital Patna on Thursday over the BPSC teacher recruitment (TRE 4.0). The situation turned violent when protesters attempting to break barricades clashed with police, who were demanding the recruitment process to start soon. The police subsequently resorted to a lathi charge, causing a stampede, with several candidates falling on top of each other.
Both male and female candidates participated in large numbers in the protest. The protesters, who began their march from Patna College, were heading towards the Dak Bungalow crossing. The city's traffic was severely affected as thousands of students took to the streets, with long queues of vehicles forming on several key routes.
The protest was led by student leader Dilip Kumar, who had earlier announced the march with thousands of candidates. The protesters alleged that the government and the education department were continuously delaying the recruitment process, leaving lakhs of candidates in a state of uncertainty.
According to the candidates, the education department had initially claimed that the recruitment process would begin in April, but no action has been taken so far. The students said that as per the BPSC calendar, the exam should have taken place much earlier, but the recruitment process has not started yet.
The protesters alleged that the delay could cause thousands of candidates to cross the age limit, after which they would no longer be eligible to take the exam. The students demanded that the government take immediate action and start the recruitment process soon.
The police had already deployed a large number of personnel to control the protest. Barricading was also done around the Dak Bungalow crossing, but the situation deteriorated during the protest, and the police had to resort to a lathi charge. After the lathi charge, several candidates were seen running for cover.
According to Rajesh Kumar, controller of BPSC exams, 46,882 posts are to be filled under the teacher recruitment. However, the candidates said that their protest would continue until the recruitment process begins.
