DMK will play the role of opposition, won't hinder government formation: Stalin

Awaz E Bihar•9 May 2026 at 05:07 pm•0 views•4 min read

DMK President and Tamil Nadu's caretaker Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed gratitude to the allied parties after the assembly election results, stating that his party would play the role of a constructive opposition and would not hinder the formation of a stable government in the state.

On Saturday, Mr. Stalin addressed the Tamil people and party workers in an emotional message, remembering his father and late leader M Karunanidhi. He said the election results were such that no party had a clear majority to form a government, but the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance had received significant public support.

He stated that he had already clarified in a media interaction that the DMK would not hinder the formation of a new government and would function as a constructive opposition.

Mr. Stalin said that party MLAs had given him the authority to make decisions, and he would do so after consulting senior leaders, keeping the party's interests in mind.

In a situation where no party has a majority, several alternative proposals emerge, he said, adding that the decision made by the allied parties should be respected to ensure a stable government in the state and avoid re-elections.

Mr. Stalin welcomed the decision of the allied parties to support the Tamil Nadu Victory Federation (TVK) in government formation while announcing that they would continue to be part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance on an ideological basis.

He indirectly criticized the Congress, saying that Congress MLAs who won on alliance tickets did not come to the party office to express gratitude, and the Congress party distanced itself from the DMK on the same day.

In contrast, he specially thanked the leaders of the Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and other allied parties, who stated that they would continue to fight for Tamil Nadu's rights and public interests along with the DMK.

DMK President and Tamil Nadu's caretaker Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed displeasure towards the Congress on Saturday, saying that while other alliance partners promised to support the DMK in the state's development, the Congress severed ties with the party on the day of the results.

Mr. Stalin said that Congress MLAs who contested and won on alliance tickets did not even come to the party office to express gratitude, and the Congress party cut ties with the DMK on the same day.

In contrast, he specially thanked the leaders of the Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and other allied parties, who stated that they would continue to fight for Tamil Nadu's rights and public interests along with the DMK.

He said that during this time, communist leaders Comrade Shanmugam and Comrade Veerapandiyan, along with Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi party leader Thirumavalavan, announced that they would continue to work with the DMK and fight for Tamil Nadu's rights and public welfare, thus expressing their spirit of camaraderie and confidence in the DMK.

Mr. Stalin said that he was grateful to the leaders of allied parties, including Professor K.M. Khader Mohideen, Vaiko, Premalatha Vijayakant, Professor Jawaharullah, Eswaran, and Tamim Ansari, for standing with them during these challenging times.

He said that in the past five years, his government had taken Tamil Nadu forward in every sector and provided benefits to the people through various welfare schemes. Mr. Stalin hoped that the new government would continue the projects related to women, youth, students, children, underprivileged classes, and government employees, ensuring the state's development continues.

In his statement, Mr. Stalin said that his party would play the role of a constructive opposition and would not hinder the formation of a stable government in the state.
