Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that the West Bengal assembly elections are crucial as their outcome will have an impact on the security of all northeastern states. Senior BJP leader Sarma said that infiltration is a major issue affecting West Bengal. He said, "These illegal infiltrators who cross the West Bengal border without any hindrance often spread to neighboring states like Assam, Tripura, and Jharkhand. Despite this, the Trinamool Congress government does not take any steps in this regard." According to him, this situation is a serious threat to the country's security, especially the security of the northeastern states. He said, "The Mamata Banerjee government in Bengal is deliberately slowing down the border fencing project due to its vote bank politics." He stated that out of the planned 456 km stretch, land has been made available for only 77 km, due to which the pace of work is slow compared to other states where fencing work is underway. Citing statistics, he said that the increase in the number of voters in districts like Uttar Dinajpur and Malda is because the Trinamool government in Bengal has given voting rights to infiltrators. Sarma said, "Trinamool is a party that actively supports infiltrators and even cross-border smuggling for its own benefit." He further said that over the past few decades, there has been a significant change in the demographic structure of West Bengal's border districts and the large increase in the number of voters in such areas is linked to cross-border infiltration. He warned, "Bengal's cultural heritage and state identity are in grave danger due to infiltrators. If this situation continues for the next 20 years, it can completely destroy Bengal's heritage."
