Residential buildings to be constructed at a cost of Rs 88.89 crore in 21 jails of Bihar

Patna, March 24 (ABN). The Bihar government has approved a major scheme to strengthen residential facilities for jail staff. Deputy Chief Minister Sushant Choudhary announced on Tuesday that a total of 44 Type-B (G3+) residential buildings will be constructed in 21 jails across the state.
He stated that the cost of each building has been fixed at Rs 202.04 lakh, with the total project cost estimated at Rs 88.89 crore. The scheme will be implemented in a phased manner during the financial year 2025-26 and subsequent years.
Deputy Chief Minister Sushant Choudhary said that the scheme is being implemented under the Bihar Jail Manual 2012 rules, which mandate providing rent-free accommodation to officers above the rank of Chief Warder within the jail premises. Additionally, arrangements have been made to provide family housing for 10% of warders and single housing for the rest.
He informed that the state currently has 5,034 sanctioned warder posts, and the residential infrastructure is being expanded to meet current and future needs. Sushant Choudhary stated that a total of 44 buildings will be constructed in 21 jails, including two in Muzaffarpur, three in Purnia, four in Motihari, two in Ara, two in Bhabhua, one in Betia, two in Siwan, two in Darbhanga, two in Madhubani, two in Sitamarhi, two in Supaul, two in Katihar, two in Kishanganj, two in Saharsa, two in Begusarai, two in Jamui, two in Lakhisarai, two in Munger, two in Sheikhpura, two in Aurangabad, and two in Nawada.
He said that the government is continuously working to develop the infrastructure to make law and order more effective and modern in the state. Recently, a scheme worth Rs 46.34 crore has been approved for the construction of police station buildings and other infrastructure in East Champaran, Araria, Saran, Begusarai, and Kishanganj.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that upon completion of the scheme, jail staff will have access to better residential facilities, a conducive work environment, and an expected improvement in jail administration's performance.
