TV journalist who popularized political analysis 'Vinod Dua'

Awaz E Bihar•10 December 2025 at 01:34 pm•4 views•8 min read

Vinod Dua
Phone Number: 9933598520
Renowned journalist, TV anchor, political analyst, and popular YouTuber, Vinod Dua was born on March 11, 1954, in Delhi to a middle-class family. He received his early education in Delhi and later graduated in English from Hansraj College, University of Delhi, and also obtained his master's degree in English literature from the University of Delhi. His childhood was spent in the refugee colonies of Delhi. His parents were Sarayki Hindus who migrated from their ancestral region of Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to India after the partition of India.

Vinod Dua's formal association with journalism began in the 1970s, when he first appeared on the Delhi station of Doordarshan, then known as Delhi Television, in November 1974, by participating in the youth program "Yuva Manch," thus formally starting his journalistic career. At that time, he appeared on Doordarshan as a young host of educational and social programs. And before long, in the 1980s, he became one of the key faces of Doordarshan. His popular program "Election Analysis" made him famous across the country. He presented election statistics, public issues, and political campaigns in a very simple language to the common people. It is said that his program "Election Analysis" changed the direction of political reporting in the country. He was the first to make the general audience understand that elections are not just a game of winning and losing, but a collection of public issues, government performance, and political strategies. He was one of the first journalists to popularize political analysis on TV in India.

Vinod Dua's journalistic style was very simple, using common language, which was his greatest strength, making complex political topics easy for anyone to understand. His research-based conversations always presented solid evidence, statistics, and historical context before making any claim. His conversations included subtle humor, wit, and social observations that made the audience more engaging. Democracy, secularism, constitution, freedom of expression, and minority rights were non-negotiable principles for him. He never shied away from questioning those in power, whether it was the government, a big media house, or a corporation.

His focus was always on "what are the facts?" rather than political affiliations. His focus was always on the problems of the common man, inflation, health, unemployment, farmers' problems, and the effects of government policies, etc. He strengthened the tradition of asking questions to the centers of power. Despite government or private pressure, he always stood by the truth and principles. He was always called a "fearless journalist." Vinod Dua had a strong dislike for communalism. That's why he was always a thorn in the side of communal forces. Whether it was the Gujarat riots or someone's mob lynching, Vinod Dua would get frustrated and say everything on his program at 9 pm that other journalists would shy away from saying. This was a remarkable thing, given that his parents had migrated from across the border in Punjab after partition and settled in Delhi. While many Punjabis in Delhi became communalized, Vinod Dua's life was never overshadowed by the bitterness of partition.

There were several notable features of Vinod Dua's journalistic style: 1. He never spoke without research. Statistics, historical context, and ground realities were the basis of his analysis. 2. Simple yet effective language, fluent conversation, and an understandable tone. This was the reason why even a common citizen from villages, towns, and cities could understand his talk. 3. He used satire with truth in such a way that the point would sink in and yet not hurt anyone. 4. Courage and impartiality were prominent in his journalism. He was a journalist who never bowed down to any pressure. Perhaps that's why he was called "one who bows down to truth, not to power." Vinod Dua was a lover of Urdu literature and Urdu poetry. This was evident in his TV shows, where he would often quote a couplet to convey his point to the audience. Renowned journalist Zafar Agha writes that "I once asked Vinod sahab where he learned Urdu, and he replied, 'I grew up in Chandni Chowk, and old Delhi was my cradle.'" Zafar Agha writes, "In the 1950s, amidst poverty, Vinod Dua not only received school education in old Delhi but also absorbed the Urdu language of the region, which became an integral part of his programs."

Vinod Dua's greatest achievement was that he strengthened the foundation of critical and constitutional journalism in India. He never shied away from criticizing the powerful. He believed, "The job of the media is not to be a spokesperson for the government, but to be a lawyer for the people." Vinod Dua was not just a seasoned journalist but a multifaceted personality. He had a good grasp of Urdu and Punjabi literature, which was evident in his programs. From Doordarshan to NDTV, India Today, Zee TV, Sahara TV, and other channels, he never compromised on his independent journalism, never bending his knees. If the owner of any channel put slight pressure on him, he would leave the channel with dignity, without any argument. He was so unique in the art of journalism that he would shine on another channel the very next night after leaving one. With the rise of digital media, he started "The Vinod Dua Show" on YouTube, which quickly became a popular platform among the masses. In this program, he presented bold analysis on everyday politics, government decisions, and social changes. His point of view was always principled, research-based, and courageous.

In his decades-long career, Vinod Dua worked as a news anchor and printer in several media organizations, including Doordarshan and NDTV. Vinod Dua was known for questioning the governments of the time in his programs. In recent years, the police in the BJP-ruled states had registered several cases against him. Between 2016 and 2018, he was associated with "The Wire" as a consultant editor and presented a program called "Jan Gan Man." In early 2019, he joined Suraj TV and HW News. In 2018, when the "Me Too" movement was at its peak, filmmaker Nishtha Jain accused Vinod Dua of sexually harassing her in an incident that took place in 1989. Dua denied the allegations and voluntarily stopped his show, calling for an independent panel to investigate the allegations. The Wire had formed a special committee under the chairmanship of a retired Supreme Court judge, but it could not reach any conclusion.

In June 2020, the Delhi Police's Crime Branch registered a case against Vinod Dua on a complaint by a BJP spokesperson. The BJP leader alleged that Dua was spreading "fake news" through his YouTube channel on HW News. A complaint also stated that he used a derogatory word for the prime minister. A Delhi court granted him interim bail in the case. Around the same time, the Himachal Pradesh police sent him a summons on a complaint by BJP leader Ajay Shyam, who alleged that in a 15-minute YouTube program on March 30, 2020, Dua made "strange allegations" about the migrant workers leaving Delhi after the sudden announcement of the lockdown. The Supreme Court, in a historic judgment earlier that year, had stated that "every journalist has the right to protection under the Kedar Nath Singh case (which had explained the scope of sedition under Section 124A of the IPC)." Vinod Dua was the first electronic media journalist to receive the prestigious 'Ramon Magsaysay Award for Excellence in Journalism.' In 2008, he was awarded the fourth-highest civilian award, 'Padma Shri,' by the Government of India, in recognition of his outstanding services to journalism. He was also awarded the 'Red Ink Award' by the Mumbai Press Club in 2018 for his lifetime achievements in journalism.

During the second wave of the coronavirus, Vinod Dua was hospitalized and had been struggling with various health issues since then. On the evening of December 4, 2021, his daughter Mallika confirmed his death on social media. It is worth mentioning that earlier, in June, Vinod Dua's wife and radiologist Padmavati Dua (Chenu Dua) had passed away due to COVID-19. Mallika had earlier stated that her father was unable to come to terms with the loss. The news of his death was widely mourned by various sections of society, particularly the journalistic community, across the country and abroad. Noted poet Javed Akhtar tweeted, expressing his emotions, "Vinod ji, this is not right. How could you do this to us? We needed you the most at this time, and you left us. Respected Vinod Dua, we will always remember you."

Renowned journalist and columnist Zafar Agha wrote, "Vinod, it's impossible to forget you, and people will realize how much your principled journalism is needed in today's times, in your absence." Indeed, Vinod Dua is no longer among us today, but he is still alive on hundreds of social media channels, and he will remain so tomorrow as well. ***
